Pesticides weaken immune systems, making it diffult for them to fight off disease.

White nose syndrome has decimated bat populations on the East Coast. Now scientists believe the disease, which is spreading, may have been worse than previously imagined.

Water is a common good for the benefit of all living beings and it should be under public, democratic, local and sustainable management. Local and traditional systems of knowledge regarding forms of water management that take into account and protect the whole ecosystem have existed for thousands of years; they have demonstrated over time their effectiveness. We believe that public policies and laws related to water should recognize and respect this knowledge.

Human Noise disrupts growth of plants

Human Noise disrupts growth of plants | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

By disrupting the behaviour of animals that disperse plant seeds man-made noise could be transforming our landscape, scientists say...

It alters birdsong and can make it difficult for some predators to hunt, and now it seems that man-made noise also affects plants.

A US team found that industrial noise disrupted the behaviour of animals that pollinate plants and disperse seeds.

This, they suggest, could be slowly transforming our landscape, especially by changing the dispersal of slow-growing trees.

The group is urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to ban the insecticide clothianidin, one of a class of chemicals that act on the central nervous system of insects.

Glacier-fed river systems threatened by climate change

Glacier-fed river systems threatened by climate change | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Copenhagen, Denmark (SPX) Mar 21, 2012 - Freshwater Biology Section at the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology.

The knowledge is new and startling. Glacial runoff is cold, nutrient-poor and physically unstable, and therefore, typically species-poor. One-third of species are threatened. The research results clearly demonstrate that the greatest number of freshwater macroinvertebrates are encountered in mountain streams where glacial runoff contributes to the streams' total volume of water.

The study also finds that if glaciers were to vanish entirely, we could expect to lose between 11 and 38 percent of a region's total macroinvertebrate species.

Even the introduction of non-GE tree monocultures has been proven to have an incredibly damaging effect on local eco-systems and communities. Eucalyptus trees are already considered to be an invasive species in Florida and California and have a whole host of associated problems due their flammability and high demand for water.

Women inspire the future of environment | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

For centuries, women have been recognized as guardians of traditional knowledge of biodiversity. Women’s role as the family caregiver allows them to create an intimate relationship with the environment, which is the primary source of food, water, and raw materials for clothes, shelter and medicine.

As such, they have become knowledgeable in the cultivation, breeding and use of various plants and animals.

Thich Nhat Hanh: maybe in 100 years there will be no more humans on the planet - The Ecologist | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

The acclaimed buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh talks to the Ecologist about the loss of biodiversity and why human vulnerability is ...a second global warming is taking place. This time because of deforestation and industrialisation; man-made, maybe in 100 years there will be no more humans on the planet, in just 100 years. After the disappearance of 95 per cent of species on the earth by the mass extinction the earth took 100 million years to restore life on earth. If our civilisation disappears it will take some time like that for another civilisation to reappear.

                           RESTORING NATURE TO NATURE

                                                   WATCH

                       "SALMON - RUNNING THE GAUNTLET"

Full Episode - 53:10 PBS Nature

This film investigates the parallel stories of collapsing Pacific salmon populations and how biologists and engineers have become instruments in audacious experiments to replicate every stage of the fish’s life cycle. Each of our desperate efforts to save salmon has involved replacing their natural cycle of reproduction and death with a radically manipulated life history. Our once great runs of salmon are now conceived in laboratories, raised in tanks, driven in trucks, and farmed in pens. Here we go beyond the ongoing debate over how to save an endangered species. In its exposure of a wildly creative, hopelessly complex, and stunningly expensive approach to managing salmon, the film reveals one of the most ambitious plans ever conceived for taking the reins of the planet. FISH UNABLE TO PASS THROUGH DAMS IN U.S. PRESENTS 'CAUTIONARY TALE' FOR DEVELOPING WORLD

Dams create a largely impenetrable barrier for fish even when the dams were installed with specially-built passages, according to a new study in Conservation Letters...The result has been a decimation of U.S. fisheries, food production, and wildlife across the river systems.
"Once these rivers supported tens of millions of pounds of biomass of these species and provided valuable protein to a growing nation," noted another co-author, Karin Limburg, with the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

-▶  ICELAND DAM PROJECT PLAYS DICE WITH NATURE, AND LOSES

Since the controversial Karahnjukar dam in East Iceland was brought into operation in 2006, conditions in the downstream Lagarfljot lake have become much worse, according to information gathered...

The salmon stock has virtually disappeared and the trout population has decreased by 80 percent. The colour of the lake has changed and become much darker due to all the sediment and suspended sediment emanating from the glacial river that now runs into the lake. The capacity for photosynthesis by algae and other plants has decreased as so little light penetrates due to the sediments in the lake. And the plant biota as a whole has declined.

Besides the decline in the fish population, some birds are also being affected, both because there is less for them to eat and because their habitats are being destroyed... http://www.ipsnews.net/2013/04/iceland-project-plays-dice-with-nature-and-loses/

From Solutions and Ronnie Vernooy...

In China, there is a growing domestic demand for organically produced crops. This organic vegetable garden, managed by a collective of small farmers (mostly women), is both a demonstration site and a production site. It is attracting attention from farmers in the neighborhood, from consumers in nearby towns, and even from the provincial capital of Nanning.

Nature is the missing, fourth dimension of the water-food-energy security nexus, says Dr Mark Smith, Director of IUCN’s Water Programme.

Nature in the nexus creates new opportunities for innovation and solutions that we will otherwise miss – at a cost to our capacity to tackle the complex, interacting pressures on the globe and on development.

: Monarch Butterfly decline linked to genetically modified crops

: Monarch Butterfly decline linked to genetically modified crops | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

The reason, according to the study, is the near-disappearance of milkweed, an important host plant for monarch eggs and caterpillars. The researchers attribute sharp declines in milkweed to widespread use of genetically modified corn and soybeans that are resistant to the herbicide, Roundup, which is then sprayed on fields, killing milkweed.
