‘Focus should be on biodiversity for food sovereignty’ - Vandana Shiva

ALLAHABAD: A two-day seminar on 'Agrarian Change and Small Farmers' organized by the GB Pant Social Science Institute concluded on Monday. The seminar explored alternative ways of addressing issues concerning marginal-and small farmers who comprise 90% of all farmers in the country and contribute 43% of the total value of agricultural output.

Salmon and Dams: "Running the Gauntlet" VIDEO: PBS Nature Full Episode

RESTORING NATURE TO NATURE AFTER MAN HAS HAD HIS WAY

                                                      WATCH

                          "SALMON - RUNNING THE GAUNTLET"

                                     Full Episode - PBS Nature

Our once great runs of salmon are now conceived in laboratories, raised in tanks, driven in trucks, and farmed in pens. Here we go beyond the ongoing debate over how to save an endangered species. In its exposure of a wildly creative, hopelessly complex, and stunningly expensive approach to managing salmon, the film reveals one of the most ambitious plans ever conceived for taking the reins of the planet. From Solutions and Ronnie Vernooy...

In China, there is a growing domestic demand for organically produced crops. This organic vegetable garden, managed by a collective of small farmers (mostly women), is both a demonstration site and a production site. It is attracting attention from farmers in the neighborhood, from consumers in nearby towns, and even from the provincial capital of Nanning.

Nature is the missing, fourth dimension of the water-food-energy security nexus, says Dr Mark Smith, Director of IUCN’s Water Programme.

Nature in the nexus creates new opportunities for innovation and solutions that we will otherwise miss – at a cost to our capacity to tackle the complex, interacting pressures on the globe and on development.

: Monarch Butterfly decline linked to genetically modified crops

: Monarch Butterfly decline linked to genetically modified crops | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

The reason, according to the study, is the near-disappearance of milkweed, an important host plant for monarch eggs and caterpillars. The researchers attribute sharp declines in milkweed to widespread use of genetically modified corn and soybeans that are resistant to the herbicide, Roundup, which is then sprayed on fields, killing milkweed.

Are Pesticides Pushing Honeybees Past the Tipping Point? | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Of particular concern is a group of pesticides, chemically similar to nicotine, called neonicotinoids (neonics for short), and one in particular called clothianidin. Instead of being sprayed, neonics are used to treat seeds, so that they’re absorbed by the plant’s vascular system, and then end up attacking the central nervous systems of bees that come to collect pollen. Virtually all of today’s genetically engineered Bt corn is treated with neonics.

They are more exotic than the gulls, gannets and terns of Britain's home coastlines, but many of the fascinating and charismatic species of birds on the remote shores of UK overseas territories are now close to extinction. In a report to the government, the RSPB warns 33 species of birds, including penguins, parrots and albatrosses, are now critically endangered across the remnants of the empire. And that means we have a duty to fulfil.

Nevertheless, rainforest fires are still bad news indeed for the birds that depend on the dark understorey found in primary forests,' explains Dr Jos Barlow of Lancaster University, a joint author of the study.

Water is a common good for the benefit of all living beings and it should be under public, democratic, local and sustainable management. Local and traditional systems of knowledge regarding forms of water management that take into account and protect the whole ecosystem have existed for thousands of years; they have demonstrated over time their effectiveness. We believe that public policies and laws related to water should recognize and respect this knowledge.

Human Noise disrupts growth of plants

Human Noise disrupts growth of plants | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

By disrupting the behaviour of animals that disperse plant seeds man-made noise could be transforming our landscape, scientists say...

It alters birdsong and can make it difficult for some predators to hunt, and now it seems that man-made noise also affects plants.

A US team found that industrial noise disrupted the behaviour of animals that pollinate plants and disperse seeds.

This, they suggest, could be slowly transforming our landscape, especially by changing the dispersal of slow-growing trees.

Beekeepers ask EPA to ban pesticide, protect bees - Over 1.25 million people also submitted comments

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Commercial beekeepers and environmental organizations filed a petition Wednesday, asking federal regulators to suspend use of a pesticide they say harms honeybees.

The group is urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to ban the insecticide clothianidin, one of a class of chemicals that act on the central nervous system of insects.

Glacier-fed river systems threatened by climate change

Glacier-fed river systems threatened by climate change | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Copenhagen, Denmark (SPX) Mar 21, 2012 - Freshwater Biology Section at the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology.

The knowledge is new and startling. Glacial runoff is cold, nutrient-poor and physically unstable, and therefore, typically species-poor. One-third of species are threatened. The research results clearly demonstrate that the greatest number of freshwater macroinvertebrates are encountered in mountain streams where glacial runoff contributes to the streams' total volume of water.

The study also finds that if glaciers were to vanish entirely, we could expect to lose between 11 and 38 percent of a region's total macroinvertebrate species.

A Brief History of Genetically Engineered Trees

A Brief History of Genetically Engineered Trees | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Even the introduction of non-GE tree monocultures has been proven to have an incredibly damaging effect on local eco-systems and communities. Eucalyptus trees are already considered to be an invasive species in Florida and California and have a whole host of associated problems due their flammability and high demand for water.

Climate Change and Biodiversity: VIDEO "Survivors of the Firestorm" ~ "Nature" Full Episode

In February 2009, The State of Victoria, Australia went up in flames; and raging fires engulfed everything in their path including the forests.

The overwhelming firestorm was one of the worst in the country’s history, and came to be known as Black Saturday. Survivors of the Firestorm follows the phoenix-like story of Victoria’s wildlife, the fall and rise of the great mountain ash forests and all that dwell within them, and the extraordinary capacity of a damaged natural world to bounce back

Chasing Rainbows: Destroying EcoSystems by Human Mistaken Utopia visions

Chasing Rainbows: Destroying EcoSystems by Human Mistaken Utopia visions | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Lured by a utopian vision of nature, fish and game agencies dropped billions of trout into thousands of lakes, destroying other fish species and ecosystems. Now, they’re determined to undo the damage they caused.

By Anders Halverson John Muir, the pioneering wilderness advocate, liked to call California’s Sierra Nevada “the Range of Light,” and once you’ve...
