BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE: No Patents on Seeds - Stop ‘Monsantosizing’ food, seeds and animals!

Farmers’ organisations from around the world, breeders, UN institutions as well as development and environmental organisations have repeatedly raised major concerns about the increasing monopolisation of seeds and farm animals via patents over the last few years. The loss of independence and rising indebtedness for farmers, a reduction of plant and animal diversity, and ever higher constraints for breeding and research activities represent some of the most worrying impacts of this trend.

An Award Winning Documentary by Patrick Rouxel on the Indonesian rainforest, deforestation and orangutan extinction. This important documentary was filmed in the fast disappearing Indonesian rainforest and is not narrated, however, its message is clear and frightening. The home of the Orangutan and many other wildlife species in Indonesia is being decimated at an alarming rate by the widespread practice of 'slash and burn' to clear the lush rainforest to make way for extensive palm oil plantations...

In 1992 Bayer was granted a license to use its systemic insecticide 'Gaucho' on Sunflowers and Maize in France. Sunflowers were massively important to the French bee-farmers since the honey derived from them amounted to something like 30,000 tonnes annually. In 1994 more than 400,000 bee-colonies died within days of the sunflowers blooming; the beekeepers could actually watch bees dying on the actual sunflowers - as soon as they had drunk the nectar and collected the pollen.
