Tarmageddon: The oil firms behind the devastating exploitation of Canada's wilderness where locals say they are dying from pollution

Tarmageddon: The oil firms behind the devastating exploitation of Canada's wilderness where locals say they are dying from pollution | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

This is ‘Tarmageddon’ – the devastation wreaked by the search for tar sand – and here, deep below the forest floor, is the third-largest oil field in the world: 173 billion barrels of recoverable oil.

This used to be a vast Canadian forest (pictured right), until the petroleum giants discovered the world’s third-largest oil field lay beneath it.

The Canadian forest in Alberta is second only to the Amazon in size. It’s critical in absorbing the Earth’s mounting deposits of carbon dioxide and carbon. Over 500 Indian tribes have lived and hunted here for thousands of years.

WHEN THE NILE RUNS DRY: Squeezing Africa dry: Behind every land grab is a water grab

WHEN THE NILE RUNS DRY: Squeezing Africa dry: Behind every land grab is a water grab | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

GRAIN looks behind the current scramble for land in Africa to reveal a global struggle for what is increasingly seen as a commodity more precious than gold or oil - water.

Food cannot be grown without water. In Africa, one in three people endure water scarcity and climate change will make things worse. Building on Africa’s highly sophisticated indigenous water management systems could help resolve this growing crisis, but these very systems are being destroyed by large-scale land grabs amidst claims that Africa's water is abundant, under-utilised and ready to be harnessed for export-oriented agriculture....

We Didn't Listen 50 Years Ago... "THE SILENT SPRING" Rachel Carson: The green revolutionary | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it
The book that changed the world is a cliché often used but rarely true, yet 50 years ago this week a book appeared which profoundly altered the way we view the Earth and our place on it: Rachel Carson's Silent Spring.

This impassioned account of how America's wildlife was being devastated by a new generation of chemical pesticides began the modern environment movement: it awoke the general consciousness that we, as humans, are part of the natural world, not separate from it, yet we can destroy it by our actions.

Edible City - Documentary | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Edible City is a 72 minute documentary film that asks a few burning questions…

“How can we live in cities and still eat local, healthy, sustainable food?”
“How can we create jobs, build local economies, and increase food security all at the same time?”
“How can we create food systems that are economically, socially, and environmentally just?”

Edible City follows ten extraordinary stories exploring what’s going on in the food movement today, from the grassroots growth to the politics in Washington, D.C., from Occupy Oakland to creating community resiliency and local economic infrastructure.

VIDEO - The Guardian - Johnny Langenheim: Indigenous Papuans are reeling from the cut-price sale of the land and forests that are their lifeblood...

Based on ancient systems of ancestral tenure, much of West Papua's rainforest is actually owned by the indigenous population. But palm oil companies owned by powerful corporations are coercing communities into selling their land, sometimes for less than $1 a hectare. Promises to build schools and homes go unfulfilled, and villagers are left bereft of the ecosystems they have relied on for generations.

At the crossroads between "green economy" and Rights of Nature

Pablo Solón - Former Bolivian UN Ambassador

http://ow.ly/bw7ip

@pablosolon

"Green economy" is about cheating nature while making profit out of it.

Humanity is at the edge of a cliff. Instead of recognizing that nature is our home and that we must respect the rights of all beings of the Earth community, transnational corporations are promoting more capitalism under the ambiguous name of “green economy.

In the period from 1970 to 2008, the Earth System has lost 30% of its biodiversity. In tropical areas, the loss has even been as high as 60%. This is not happening by accident. This is the result of an economic system that treats nature as a thing, as just a source of resources. For capitalists, nature is mainly an object to posses, exploit, transform and most specially profit out of it...

Defining our terms: Agroecology and sustainable agriculture in the context of Rio+20

Defining our terms: Agroecology and sustainable agriculture in the context of Rio+20 | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

- Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy via Michael Pollan

Two visions of "sustainable development" in Africa-- same word, different world views. At stake here are two different visions of control over the commons.

These two distinct calls for sustainability in agriculture are thus informed by two very differing worldviews.

One stems from people’s desire to control their destiny, and protect the natural resource base that is their home. The other is informed by the desire to ensure continued access to natural resources so that those in authority can minimally take care of the basic needs of the poor as they make sure that they can make a profit in the process. . http://www.iatp.org/blog/201205/defining-our-terms-agroecology-and-sustainable-agriculture-in-the-context-of-rio20

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Over 1.3 billion forest peoples’ rights are in need of stronger national and international protection.

Forest peoples have, over the centuries, elaborated and practised livelihood systems derived from their natural environment and anchored in traditional knowledge, practices and beliefs. Forest peoples depend primarily and directly on the forest both for subsistence and trade in the form of fishing, hunting, shifting agriculture, the gathering of wild forest products and other activities.

However, the persistent and widespread degradation of these vital areas poses a direct threat to the rural communities and indigenous peoples who have inhabited and depended on them directly and primarily for centuries and continue to do so.
