Brazil: Taking genetically engineered soy lead while respecting remaining rainforest: Monocrops, Pesticides, Soil

Brazil: Taking genetically engineered soy lead while respecting remaining rainforest: Monocrops, Pesticides, Soil | Biodiversity IS Life -- Conservation,Ecosystems,Wildlife,Rivers,Water,Forests | Scoop.it

Jan 25, 2013 - DW WORLD

Brazil is expected to surpass the United States as the world's biggest genetically engineered soy producer by the end of 2013.

Though Brazil's soy industry no longer contributes massively to the deforestation of rainforests, increased soy cultivation has other negative effects. The large-scale use of pesticides and genetically modified plants are the biggest problems in monocultures. GM soybeans have been legal in Brazil since 2005, and it's estimated they make up some 75 percent of production now. Brazil is also the world's leading user of pesticides.

"The way that soybeans are produced must be reconsidered to be able to guarantee a sustainable use of soil, to maintain biodiversity in the forests and fields, which are being contaminated by pesticides, and also to ensure the genetic diversity of grains," says Greenpeace's Romulo Batista.... http://www.dw.de/brazil-to-take-soy-lead-with-respect-for-rainforest/a-16547231

Leatherback sea turtles suffer 78 percent decline at critical nesting sites in Pacific | Biodiversity IS Life -- Conservation,Ecosystems,Wildlife,Rivers,Water,Forests | Scoop.it

Feb 27, 2013 - Mongabay

The world's largest sea turtle, the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), is vanishing from its most important nesting sites in the western Pacific, according to a new study in Ecosphere.

"Sea turtles have been around about 100 million years and survived the extinction of the dinosaurs but are struggling to survive the impact of humans," co-author Thane Wibbels with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), told Reuters.

Feb 15, 2013 Living on Earth: STARVING POLAR BEARS
Polar Bears have long been the poster species for the problem of climate change. But a new paper in Conservation Letters argues that supplemental feeding may be necessary to prevent polar bear populations from going extinct. Polar bear expert Andrew Derocher from the University of Alberta joins Host Steve Curwood to discuss how we can save the largest bear on the planet.http://www.loe.org/shows/segments.html?programID=13-P13-00007&segmentID=2
