Zakri said there were 30,000 edible plants but that just 30 crops accounted for 95 percent of the energy in human food that is dominated by rice, wheat, maize, millet and sorghum....

He said it was "more important than ever to have a large genetic pool to enable organisms to withstand and adapt to new conditions." Ecuador owed China more than $7 billion — more than a tenth of its GDP — as of last summer.

In 2009 China began loaning Ecuador billions of dollars in exchange for oil shipments. It also helped fund two of the country's biggest hydroelectric infrastructure projects, and China National Petroleum Corp may soon have a 30 percent stake in a $10 billion oil refinery in Ecuador.

"My understanding is that this is more of a debt issue – it's because the Ecuadoreans are so dependent on the Chinese to finance their development that they're willing to compromise in other areas such as social and environmental regulations," Adam Zuckerman, environmental and human rights campaigner at California-based NGO Amazon Watch, told the Guardian.

Ethiopia has been the focus of aggressive foreign agricultural investment, leasing out nearly 3.6 million hectares of land for commercial farm ventures from 2008-2010. This investment has corresponded with widespread human rights violations. Most egregiously, the Ethiopian government's villagization program will displace 1.5 million people by 2013--with the five administrative regions that have the largest share of foreign investment the hardest hit. Ethiopia has begun diverting the Blue Nile 500 metres (yards) from its natural course to construct a $4.2 billion (3.2 billion euro) hydroelectric project known as Grand Renaissance Dam.

The Blue Nile joins the White Nile in Khartoum to form the Nile which flows through Sudan and Egypt before emptying into the Mediterranean.

Multinational corporations are seizing and deforesting large tracts of  land in Indonesia.

This new "Corporate colonialism" is bringing farmer deaths, poverty, human rights violations and ecological catastrophe to Indonesia with little recourse for the local communities who suffer the effects of projects touted as "growth," the Guardian's John Vidal reports. In the match between corporate power and the poor in the archipelago, the number of conflicts is on the rise....

"These developments are classed as 'growth' but what we are seeing is the collapse of communities of fisherfolk or farmers and increasing poverty," he continues.  "We are exchanging biodiversity for monocultures, local economies for global ones, small-scale producers are becoming labourers and community land is becoming corporate. This is the direction we are going."

One problem for communities is the growing number of palm oil plantations, which, Henry Sarigih, founder of the Indonesian Peasant Union, says "has spawned a new poverty and is triggering a crisis of landlessness and hunger."... http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2013/05/26-0
