In Africa around 80% of seed comes from local and community saved seed resources. This seed is adapted to local conditions. It forms an integral part of community food security and agricultural integrity. This entire traditional system is now under threat. A broad front of commercial interests, aided and abetted by the World Bank, the American Seed Association and government agencies, along with front groups, academics and so-called philanthropists, are endeavouring to alienate this crucial resource. There’s nothing they are leaving untouched: the mustard, the okra, the bringe oil, the rice, the cauliflower. Once they have established the norm: that seed can be owned as their property, royalties can be collected. We will depend on them for every seed we grow of every crop we grow. If they control the seed, they control the food supply, they know it — it’s strategic. Now they are genetically engineering our trees, fish, meat, and all food... can this unrelenting, unregulated, unlabeled, juggernaut be paused until we have sufficient legitimate independently-funded peer-reviewed scientific studies that guarantee that neither human nor environmental health will be devastatingly impacted in either the short or long-term? We're rushing these gmo's to market so fast there is no time to seriously determine their pros and cons, without the gigantic biotech industry's pr machine bombarding us with glowing stories of "feed the world" "sustainable" "green" while the attending lashings of the patented pesticides and chemicals needed to grow these crops are destroying our soil, waterways and beneficial insects and ecosystems. 29 April 2013 - LifeWise Europe will enforce the world’s first continent-wide ban on widely used insecticides linked to serious harm in bees, after a European commission vote on Monday, April 29, 2013. The landmark suspension is a victory for millions of environment campaigners concerned about dramatic declines in bees who were backed by experts at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Among the report's, Assessing Risks to Endangered and Threatened Species from Pesticides recommendations are that EPA more broadly account for pesticides’ direct and indirect harm to wildlife—including harm that is not immediately lethal, and impacts to food supply and habitat—and better consider the combined effects of exposure to multiple pesticides mixing in the environment.... FOOD OR FUEL? THE PROBLEM WITH BIOFUELS, AGROFUELS, BIODIESEL: No Matter which way you cut the case the idea of biofuels, although glowing, is not "sustainable" and is tied to big profits in commodity trading, agriculture and the devastating global landgrabbing. Nature requires a balanced, biodiverse ecosystem in order to maintain her balance and support for all life on this planet. Monoculture crops destroy biodiversity with it's genetically engineered gene-altering technology that requires lashings and lashings of pesticides and chemicals to produce, creating a sterile environment where no life but the crop can survive. The land grab issue is of deep concern, for once you own the land you can do what you want with it, including redirecting water rights and poisoning the soil (and water). The end result: the local environment, biodiversity and ecosystems (including animal life) is disappeared, leaving a barren rotating, monoculture crop designed for export. This type of thinking destroys cultures, local communities and our biosphere contributing to climate change, more poverty, higher food prices and fueling the commodity markets for profit and quarterly bottom lines. So let's rethink what we are doing with the rush for more biofuels.

Forests not only contribute to diverse and nutritious diets, particularly for the poorest members of society, but also sustain agriculture through the provision of critical ecosystem services such as pollination, soil stabilization and watershed protection. The intensification of agriculture experienced through the green revolution of the 1940s to 1970s, which led to the development of high-yielding varieties of cereal grains, expansion of irrigation and greater use of hybridized seeds, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, certainly resulted in increased yields, but it also came at the expense of the wider environment.
