                                        THE BAIT AND SWITCH

Palm Corporations Knew This Law Was Coming Up, Making It Easy to say "No" To Deforestation.  They Can Blame Deforestation on  the Law Now. They Are Not Going To Give Up This Billion Dollar Ecocide Business Easily.  They will do everything they can to find a way around any moratorium.

                                    Mongabay, October 21, 2014
INDONESIAN LAW NOW BARS PALM OIL COMPANIES FROM PROTECTING FORESTS. A law passed by the Indonesian government last month makes it even more difficult for palm oil companies to conserve tracts of wildlife-rich and carbon-dense forests within their concessions, potentially undermining these producers' commitments to phase deforestation out of their supply chains, warns a new report. This new law requires them to clear all their concession within 6 years.   http://news.mongabay.com/2014/1020-palm-oil-conservation.html

PALM OIL GIANTS ANNOUNCE DEFORESTATION MORATORIUM - - Five of the world's largest palm oil producers have announced an immediate moratorium on palm oil sourced via clearance of potential high carbon stock forests. On Friday, Asian Agri, IOI Corporation Berhad, Kuala Lumpur Kepong (KLK) Berhad, Musim Mas Group and Sime Darby Plantation said they will suspend forest clearing until they have completed a year-along study that aims to establish a threshold for defining what constitutes high carbon stock (HCS) forest. http://news.mongabay.com/2014/0920-palm-oil-deforestation-moratorium.html

INDIA PLANS HUGE PALM OIL EXPANSION, PUTS FORESTS AT RISK Palm oil, a ubiquitous ingredient in supermarket products ranging from shampoos and cosmetics to processed foods, comes at a huge environmental cost. Between 1990 and 2010, palm oil monocultures replaced over 3.5 million hectares of forest in Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. This large scale deforestation has resulted in a massive loss of biodiversity and wildlife habitat, best illustrated perhaps by the annihilation of orangutan populations. Moreover, conversion of large peatlands to oil palm plantations releases millions of metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION IS UPON US

CAN HUMANS SURVIVE?

-▶ Are we in the first act of a mass extinction that will end in the death of millions of plant and animal species across the planet, including us? Proponents of the “sixth extinction” theory believe the answer is yes.

Five mass extinctions have nearly wiped out life on earth. As Annalee Newitz writes in her new book, the sixth is coming... http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2013/05/06/the-sixth-mass-extinction-is-upon-us-can-humans-survive.html

Interview With Elizabeth Kolbert, Author @ElizKolbert

IN THE WORLD'S "SIXTH EXTINCTION": ARE HUMANS THE ASTEROID? Elizabeth Kolbert is the author of the new book The Sixth Extinction. It begins with a history of the "big five" extinctions of the past, and goes on to explain how human behavior is creating this sixth one — including our use of fossil fuels and the effects of climate change.

"We are effectively undoing the beauty and the variety and the richness of the world which has taken tens of millions of years to reach," Kolbert tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "... We're sort of unraveling that. ... We're doing, it's often said, a massive experiment on the planet and we really don't know what the end point is going to be." http://www.npr.org/2014/02/12/275885377/in-the-worlds-sixth-extinction-are-humans-the-asteroid

-CALL OF LIFE:  FACING THE MASS EXTINCTION  (2010)

Call of Life: Facing the Mass Extinction is the first feature documentary to investigate the growing threat to Earth’s life support systems from this unprecedented loss of biodiversity. Through interviews with leading scientists, psychologists, anthropologists, philosophers, and indigenous and religious leaders, the film explores the causes, the scope, and the potential effects of the mass extinction, but also looks beyond the immediate causes of the crisis to consider how our cultural and economic systems, along with deep-seated psychological and behavioral patterns, have allowed this situation to develop, continue to reinforce it, and even determine our response to it.
Call of Life tells the story of a crisis not only in nature, but also in human nature, a crisis more threatening than anything human beings have ever faced before. http://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/call_of_life_facing_the_mass_extinction_2010/

That’s not even counting the ones threatened by habitat eradication, toxins, and other plagues we have wrought on those with whom we share our home.
Solving these problems will take a global village. Every sector has some role to play, including the private sector, which has until recently been cast primarily as the problem, not part of the solution. http://www.takepart.com/article/2014/05/16/endangered-species-day-everyone-has-role-play

Report: Climate Change Has Already Brought Catastrophe to US Wildlife

Report: Climate Change Has Already Brought Catastrophe to US Wildlife | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Jan 30, 2013

Climate change has already pushed the nation's wildlife into crisis, according to a report released Wednesday from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), and further catastrophe, including widespread extinction, can only be curbed with swift action to curb the carbon pollution that has the planet sweltering.

Entitled Wildlife in a Warming World: Confronting the Climate Crisis, the report looks at 8 regions across the U.S. where "the underlying climatic conditions to which species have been accustomed for thousands of years," the report explains, have been upturned by human-caused climate change.

“Some of America’s most iconic species—from moose to sandhill cranes to sea turtles – are seeing their homes transformed by rapid climate change,” stated Dr. Amanda Staudt, climate scientist at the National Wildlife Federation.

Up to 90 percent of West Africa’s coastal rain forests have disappeared since 1900. Brazil and Indonesia, which contain the world’s two largest surviving regions of rain forest, are being stripped at an alarming rate by logging, fires, and land-clearing for agriculture and cattle-grazing.

Fires raging in an Indonesian swamp forest may have killed a third of the rare Sumatran orangutans. About 200 still live there. Only 12,267 hectares (30,311 acres) of Tripa’s original 60,000 hectares (148,260 acres) of forest remain. The rest has been broken up and degraded as palm oil companies drain the swamp and terminate the life of the forests.

The blatant and criminal disregard for international agreements and treaties by the PALM OIL INDUSTRY  http://rspo.org is creating ECOCIDE throughout the world's rainforests, destroying all life within the forests, disposing native peoples from their lands and turning forest people into slaves.  The "Green-Washing" is deplorable and reprehensible. Glaringly obvious are their lies-for-profit public relations campaigns.  Their latest pr spin "Sustainable palm is good for environment, and business revenues - World Wildlife Fund report" http://ow.ly/a6X0U and raises serious questions about the integrity of the WORLD WILDLIFE FUND SEE: "The Pact with the Panda Part 1" - YouTube http://ow.ly/a6XFT

NEW HOLISTIC  'ONE HEALTH'  CONNECTS HUMANS, ANIMALS AND ECOSYSTEMSRecently, the dilemma of human–wildlife conflict has created great opportunity to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems for both people and ecosystems. The emerging holistic “One Health” movement explicitly recognizes the inextricable connections between human, animal, and ecosystem health, and is leading not only to new scientific research but also to projects that help people rise out of poverty, improve their health, reduce conflicts with wildlife, and preserve ecosystems, such as Bwindi’s tropical montane forest... http://news.mongabay.com/2014/0501-nicole-sri-ehp-one-health.html

THE DAWN CHORUS IS DYING OUT AS BIRD NUMBERS DECREASE

ANYONE awakened by bird song this morning should cherish the moment.... While town birds are increasing the decibels to compete with urban noise, the countryside is slipping slowly towards an eerie silence.

Many of the iconic birds whose mating calls ring out across woodlands and open fields during early May are vanishing at an alarming rate... http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/397195/The-dawn-chorus-is-dying-out-as-bird-numbers-decrease

Twice a year, the rufa red knot performs one of the planet's most amazing migrations. After wintering in the southern reaches of Argentina and Chile, the red knot will fly roughly 9,300 miles (15,000 kilometers) north, eventually reaching the Canadian Arctic for a summer of mating and breeding. Come fall, it will return south, this robin-size bird with a mere 20-inch (51-centimeter) wingspan flying without rest for stretches of up to 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/10/131003-rufa-red-knot-threatened-endangered-migrating-birds/#close-modal

EUROPE'S VULTURES UNDER THREAT FROM DRUG THAT KILLED TENS OF MILLIONS OF BIRDS IN ASIA. After an ecological disaster in India, wildlife groups call for ban on vets using diclofenac in Italy and Spain. Wildlife groups have launched a Europe-wide campaign to outlaw a newly approved veterinary drug that has caused the deaths of tens of millions of vultures in Asia. They say that the decision to allow diclofenac to be used in Spain and Italy not only threatens to wipe out Europe's vultures but could harm other related species, including the golden eagle and the Spanish imperial eagle, one of the world's rarest raptors. http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/jun/07/european-vultures-threat-diclofenac-vets-spain-italy

pdjmoo's insight:

It is time to take the rose colored glasses off and realize that nuclear weapons and power constitute a grave threat from their life-cycle radioactive waste for tens of thousands of years if not millions.   Man has yet to devise a container that will have a life-cycle this far out.  Therefore, common sense says, no more nuclear energy plants until such time as science comes up with a way to neutralize this highly radioactive and poisonous waste that has the ability to kill all life it touches... our soils, water, oceans and food supply and environment

In this article they include the many things that are continuously brought to the populations attention about out earth and how we treat it. But in the passage it includes many unbelievable facts such as roughly 89 million gallons of food is put into waste each year. Sometimes this is the approach you need to catch peoples attention on the effects that we are causing our planet.

Spain's Green Groups Slam Rollback of Conservation Policies

"Spain's new conservative government has announced changes in environmental policy that are a significant step backwards for environmental protection in the country, provoking an immediate, harsh reaction from the opposition and civil society."

For years we have heard from political leaders that economy and ecology should walk hand in hand, but when crisis hits, the environment is clearly left behind. In times where we need a transformational new "green" economy, the brown economy is back with a vengeance.

Biodiversity crisis: Habitat loss and climate change causing 6th mass extinction : scientists

Scientists meeting at the University of Copenhagen have warned that biodiversity is declining rapidly throughout the world, describing the loss of species as the 6th mass extinction event on the earth. The world is losing species at a rate that is 100 to 1000 times faster than the natural extinction rate, with the challenges of conserving the world's species larger than mitigating the negative effects of global climate change.
