BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE –
The Miraculous Web of Life Sustains ALL Species on Planet Earth – Healthy Ecosystems, Healthy Humans. WITHOUT NATURE WE DO NOT EXIST. PERIOD.  To the degree Nature is sick, so are we.  We humans must reintegrate into the greater web of life as a species within it and not separate from it, by returning to respect and restoring balance and harmony to that which supports all life on this planet ... Nature ... #GDP should be replaced by #EcoEconomics ... Putting front and center the concerns for how we are destroying and objectifying the natural world for profit  #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Forests #Environment #Biodiversity #Ecoeconomics #CSR #GDP #Anthropocene

The Freshwater Project - Important Freshwater Environments Across the Globe

The Freshwater Project - Important Freshwater Environments Across the Globe | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

-▶ GREAT PHOTOGRAPHS OF IMPORTANT FRESHWATER ENVIRONMENTS ACROSS THE GLOBE

Michel Roggo is based in Switzerland, and this has a lot to do with his passion: He started freshwater photography in the countless crystal clear rivers and lakes of the Swiss Alps. With 25 years of experience and about 100 expeditions worldwide, he has the skills to work on a global freshwater project: Produce a photographic documentation of 30 important freshwater environments from across the globe, focusing on underwater images. This as a contribution to safeguarding the future of the world's wetland areas. The duration of the project is 4 years, starting 2011. So far, about 20 locations have been photographed. http://www.roggo.ch/thefreshwaterproject/

WHERE ARE THE REGULATIONS AND LIABILITY FOR POISONING OUR WATER, SOILS AND LAYING WASTE TO OUR ENVIRONMENT? WHY IS THE FRACKING INDUSTRY NOT BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR LAND & IMMINENT DOMAIN GRABS, PAYING TAXES AND COLLATERAL/ENVIRONMENTAL  DAMAGE?  AND DON'T BUY THE "JOBS" CARD - IT'S A PLOY.

                        POLITICS TRUMPS SAFE DRINKING WATER

Fracking into underground drinking water sources is NOT prohibited by the 2005 Energy Policy Act, which exempted the practice from key provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Oil companies get a free ride at expense of both environmental and human health with little or no oversight or regulation. Damage May Be Irreversible

-▶ HIGH LEVELS OF BENZENE FOUND IN FRACKING WASTE RE-INJECTED INTO GROUND WATER. Tests find significant concentrations of the human carcinogen benzene in this so-called "flowback fluid." In some cases, the fracking waste liquid, which is frequently reinjected into groundwater, contained benzene levels thousands of times greater than state and federal agencies consider safe. The presence of benzene in fracking waste water is raising alarm over potential public health dangers amid admissions by state oil and gas regulators that California for years inadvertently allowed companies to inject fracking flowback water into protected aquifers containing drinking water.http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-fracking-20150211-story.html#page=1

INJECTION WELLS:  THE POISON BENEATH US.

There are more than 680,000 underground waste and injection wells nationwide..."In 10 to 100 years we are going to find out that most of our groundwater is polluted...A lot of people are going to get sick, and a lot of people may die." ...Over the past several decades, The boom in oil and natural gas drilling has injected more than 30 trillion gallons of toxic liquid deep into the earth, using broad expanses of the nation's geology as an invisible dumping ground.

No company would be allowed to pour such dangerous chemicals into the rivers or onto the soil. But until recently, scientists and environmental officials have assumed that deep layers of rock beneath the earth would safely entomb the waste for millennia. There are growing signs they were mistaken.

HOW FRACKING CAN MAKE WATER FLAMMABLE
One of the most outrageous and unbelievable effects of fracking in some areas is the phenomenon of tap water becoming flammable, straight from the tap, due to methane and other gasses leaching into ground wells and water supplies. Watching a faucet set on fire and hearing the stories of the people involved is not something that can be too readily dismissed, and here are a 5 examples of this:

We’ve long known that environmental factors contribute to disease, especially contamination of air, water, and soil. Scientists are now learning the connection is stronger than we realized.

But in the passage it includes many unbelievable facts such as roughly 89 million gallons of food is put into waste each year. Sometimes this is the approach you need to catch peoples attention on the effects that we are causing our planet.

The Curse of Industrial Farm Fertilizers and Runoff Creating Devastating Web of Pollution

▶  OUR FERTILIZED WORLD

If we don’t watch out, agriculture could destroy our planet. Here’s how to grow all the food we need with fewer chemicals.

N. Nitrogen. Atomic number seven. Unnoticed, untasted, it nevertheless fills our stomachs. It is the engine of agriculture, the key to plenty in our crowded, hungry world.

Enter modern chemistry. Giant factories capture inert nitrogen gas from the vast stores in our atmosphere and force it into a chemical union with the hydrogen in natural gas, creating the reactive compounds that plants crave. That nitrogen fertilizer—more than a hundred million tons applied worldwide every year—fuels bountiful harvests.

Yet this modern miracle exacts a price. Runaway nitrogen is suffocating wildlife in lakes and estuaries, contaminating groundwater, and even warming the globe’s climate. As a hungry world looks ahead to billions more mouths needing nitrogen-rich protein, how much clean water and air will survive our demand for fertile fields?... http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/05/fertilized-world/charles-text

Benny Haoxiang Liang's curator insight, December 11, 2013 8:47 PM

The econimic contrast between Africa, the United States, and China is staggering.  From using by far excessive amounts of fertilizer in China, measured in hundreds of pounds per acre, to Africa, where the amount used is measured in handfuls.  Overuse of fertilizer is an issue that definitely needs to be addressed.  Algal blooms flowing down rivers have the potential to cripple the economies of sea-driven towns.

Some 126,000 barrels of nuclear waste have been dumped in the Asse II salt mine over the last 50 years. German politicians are pushing for a law promising their removal. But the safety, technical and financial hurdles are enormous, and experts warn that removal is more dangerous than leaving them put... http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/germany-weighs-options-for-handling-nuclear-waste-in-asse-mine-a-884523.html

pdjmoo's insight:

It is time to take the rose colored glasses off and realize that nuclear weapons and power constitute a grave threat from their life-cycle radioactive waste for tens of thousands of years if not millions.   Man has yet to devise a container that will have a life-cycle this far out.  Therefore, common sense says, no more nuclear energy plants until such time as science comes up with a way to neutralize this highly radioactive and poisonous waste that has the ability to kill all life it touches... our soils, water, oceans and food supply and environment
