Bifurcation under far-from-equilibrium conditions and emergence of Life

Bifurcation under far-from-equilibrium conditions and emergence of Life | BioPlug | Scoop.it

In his latest work, Kompanichenko reviews the concept of transition from non-living to living suggesting that the transition into primary forms of life might occur only in the microsystems oscillating around the bifurcation point under far-from-equilibrium conditions. The transformation consists in the inversion of the balance “free energy contribution / entropy contribution”, from negative to positive values. At the inversion moment the microsystem radically reorganizes in accordance with the new negentropy (i.e. biological) way of organization. According to this approach, the origin-of-life process on the early Earth took place in the fluctuating hydrothermal medium.

Why ‘Natural’ Doesn’t Mean Anything Anymore

Why ‘Natural’ Doesn’t Mean Anything Anymore | BioPlug | Scoop.it
It isn’t every day that the definition of a common English word that is ubiquitous in common parlance is challenged in federal court, but that is precisely what has happened with the word “natural.” During the past few years, some 200 class-action suits have been filed against food manufacturers, charging them with misuse of the adjective in marketing such edible oxymorons as “natural” Cheetos Puffs, “all-natural” Sun Chips, “all-natural” Naked Juice, “100 percent all-natural” Tyson chicken nuggets and so forth. The plaintiffs argue that many of these products contain ingredients — high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and colorings, chemical preservatives and genetically modified organisms — that the typical consumer wouldn’t think of as “natural.”

Biologists discover electric bacteria that eat pure electrons rather than sugar, redefining the tenacity of life - ExtremeTech

Biologists discover electric bacteria that eat pure electrons rather than sugar, redefining the tenacity of life - ExtremeTech | BioPlug | Scoop.it
Some intrepid biologists at the University of Southern California (USC) have discovered bacteria that survives on nothing but electricity -- rather than food, they eat and excrete pure electrons. These bacteria yet again prove the almost miraculous tenacity of life -- but, from a technology standpoint, they might also prove to be useful in enabling the creation of self-powered nanoscale devices that clean up pollution. Some of these bacteria also have the curious ability to form into "biocables" that are centimeters long, and conduct electricity as well as copper wires -- a capability that might one day be tapped to build long, self-assembling subsurface networks for human use.

Three-Dimensional Structures Self-Assembled from DNA Bricks

Luciana P. Santos's insight:

A team of researchers from Harvard's Wyss Institute have created self-assembling 3D nanobricks out of DNA — essentially inventing a nanoscale version of Lego — that can be used to build thousands of different objects.

What the research team has done is create a very short DNA "brick" of a single strand with 32 nucleotides, that will connect with other bricks, but only at a 90° angle. A 10x10x10 structure of these bricks was created by giving each a unique DNA sequence that would only fit in one place, leading to a self-assembling cube of 1000 DNA voxels.
