Ecuador To Sell A Third Of Its Amazon Rainforest To Chinese Oil Companies

Ecuador To Sell A Third Of Its Amazon Rainforest To Chinese Oil Companies | Bio { Cultural } Diversity | Scoop.it
As oil forces a state of emergency in Peru.

Ecuador owed China more than $7 billion — more than a tenth of its GDP — as of last summer.

In 2009 China began loaning Ecuador billions of dollars in exchange for oil shipments. It also helped fund two of the country's biggest hydroelectric infrastructure projects, and China National Petroleum Corp may soon have a 30 percent stake in a $10 billion oil refinery in Ecuador.

"My understanding is that this is more of a debt issue – it's because the Ecuadoreans are so dependent on the Chinese to finance their development that they're willing to compromise in other areas such as social and environmental regulations," Adam Zuckerman, environmental and human rights campaigner at California-based NGO Amazon Watch, told the Guardian.

The Next Green Revolution (This Time Without Fossil Fuels)

The Next Green Revolution (This Time Without Fossil Fuels) | Bio { Cultural } Diversity | Scoop.it

June 2013 Solutions Journal
THE NEXT GREEN REVOLUTION (THIS TIME WITHOUT FOSSIL FUELS)

A method of growing crops called the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) produces yields that can be four or five times higher than other methods. SRI uses few or no pesticides and requires no fertilizer. The great success of SRI methodology across many countries is leading to its adoption for crops other than rice, mainly by innovative small farmers. The SRI method does not rely on specially bred varieties. The resulting crops are resilient, nutritious, pesticide-free, and their cost of production is low. It therefore is proving highly popular with small farmers. Does it sound too good to be true? There are questions of scalability: the system is unlikely to displace the agro-industrial complex. But when the majority of the world's farmers—almost a billion people—continue to make a living on small plots of lands, SRI can transform their lives.

Dorian Q Fuller's curator insight, January 29, 2013 5:01 AM

Genetic evidence for gene flow from South Indians to Australian aborigines. This makes an alternative introduction of the dog/dingo from India rather than friom Austronesian possible. The date estimate of "around 4,230 y ago" seems awefully precise for a molecular clock calculation, and is surely suspect. Still a data closer to 3500 BP would accord well with the arrival of sandal wood into South India, from it probable origins in Indonesia (which I have written on elsewhere). PNAS article: http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/01/09/1211927110.abstract

Dorian Q Fuller's comment, February 21, 2013 3:17 AM
However, the absdence of any evidence for gene flow from South India to Isaldn Southeast Asia, where we know there was Indian influence and enclaves, raises some doubts about the reliability of this study.

Terracide and the Terrarists ...

Call it irony, if you will, or call it a nightmare, but Big Oil evidently has no qualms about making its next set of profits directly off melting the planet.  Its top executives continue to plan their futures (and so ours), knowing that their extremely profitable acts are destroying the very habitat, the very temperature range that for so long made life comfortable for humanity.

Their prior knowledge of the damage they are doing is what should make this a criminal activity.  And there are corporate precedents for this, even if on a smaller scale.  The lead industry, the asbestos industry, and the tobacco companies all knew the dangers of their products, made efforts to suppress the information or instill doubt about it even as they promoted the glories of what they made, and went right on producing and selling while others suffered and died.... http://www.commondreams.org/view/2013/05/23-4

Large-scale biodiversity is vital to maintain ecosystem health | Bio { Cultural } Diversity | Scoop.it

June 7, 2013 Science Daily

Over the years ecologists have shown how biological diversity benefits the health of small, natural communities. New analysis by ecologists at UC Santa Cruz demonstrates that even higher levels of biological diversity are necessary to maintain ecosystem health in larger landscapes over long periods of time.... http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/06/130607160335.htm?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+sciencedaily%2Fearth_climate+%28ScienceDaily%3A+Earth+%26+Climate+News%29

Functional genomics based understanding of rice endosperm development

Functional genomics based understanding of rice endosperm development | Bio { Cultural } Diversity | Scoop.it

Seed development, especially the relevant regulatory mechanism and genetic network are of fundamental scientific interest. Seed development consists of the development of embryo and endosperm; and endosperm development of rice (model species of monocots) is closely related to grain yield and quality. Recent genetic studies, together with other approaches, including transcriptome and proteomics analysis, high-throughput sequencing (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq), revealed the crucial roles of genetic and epigenetic controls in rice endosperm development. Here we summarize and update the genetic networks involved in the regulation of endosperm initiation, cell cycle regulation, aleurone layer specification, starch synthesis, storage protein accumulation and endosperm size, and the interactions between embryo and endosperm.

Looks like a very useful review of the various genes affecting rice grain development, from waxy starch to grain width. Many of these could be selected during various stages in domestication history.
