Avantium, a renewable chemicals company, and ALPLA Werke Alwin Lehner GmbH, one of the world's leading plastic converters, have announced their Joint Development Agreement for the development of PEF bottles. After The Coca-Cola Co. and Danone, ALPLA is the third company to collaborate with Avantium on PEF, a bioplastic based on Avantium's proprietary YXY technology. The goal of these collaborations is to bring 100 percent biobased PEF bottles to the market by 2016.

Study Shows Americans Seeking Biobased Products

Seventy percent of Americans say they shop for "green" products on a regular basis. That number is up 10 percent in the last three years, so companies who make sustainable products are taking note that they should address this growing audience. And as the evolution of green products is occurring, new certifications and labels are being introduced. One such certification is the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Biobased Product label, an initiative of the BioPreferred Program. Launched in 2011, the program and label already have a 23 consumer recognition score, according to a recent study.

Versalis signs agreement with Pirelli for joint research project on guayule-based natural rubber

Versalis (Eni) and Pirelli have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to kick off a joint research project for the use of guayule-based natural rubber in tire production.

The research project will run over a period of three years. On an exclusivity basis, Versalis will provide an innovative range of guayule-based natural rubber materials, while Pirelli will carry out trial tests to validate the performance of the materials for tire production.
