Support Open Standards, OpenData and OpenSource in the UK

Support Open Standards, OpenData and OpenSource in the UK | Binterest | Scoop.it

The UK government is currently consulting on the use of Open Standards and Open Source as an alternative for proprietary software. The large companies who stand to lose out are lobbying the UK government and are able to throw large sums of cash into discrediting open source and open standards. As the open source community, we have generally not responded to the consultation because we may have read it and thought "that’s really good." We need to feed this back otherwise this will become a one sided debate. Don’t let large corporates buy UK policy!

Which license do you choose for your code?

Which license do you choose for your code? | Binterest | Scoop.it

Distributing any work – a piece of code, a software program, or even markup – under an opensource license implies that the original creator has granted specific permissions to re-use and re-distribute the work without prior approval. It does not equate to a relinquishing of all copyrights; instead, it facilitates the use of existing work by other programmers and developers, provided they credit the original author.

Open Source Think Tank 2012: To GPL and beyond

Open Source Think Tank 2012: To GPL and beyond | Binterest | Scoop.it
Now, as you know, I’m not a fan of any single license. I like flexibility in my choices and because I like the choices to be mine, I tend to lean towards permissive-style licenses.

First pure quantum network is here, promises perfect security

First pure quantum network is here, promises perfect security | Binterest | Scoop.it

A quantum network is just like a regular network, the one that you're almost certainly connected to at this very moment. The only difference is that each node in the network is just a single atom (rubidium atoms, as it happens), and those atoms are connected by photons. For the first time ever, scientists have managed to get these individual atoms to read a qubit off of a photon, store that qubit, and then write it out onto another photon and send it off to another atom, creating a fully functional quantum network that has the potential to be expanded to however many atoms we want.
