Google: introducing the Knowledge Graph

Google: introducing the Knowledge Graph | Binterest | Scoop.it

When you search, you’re not just looking for a webpage. You’re looking to get answers, understand concepts and explore.

The next frontier in search is to understand real-world things and the relationships among them. So we're building a Knowledge Graph: a huge collection of the people, places and things in the world and how they're connected to one another.

This is how we’ll be able to tell if your search for “mercury” refers to the planet or the chemical element--and also how we can get you smarter answers to jump start your discovery.

Italian Economic Deterioration Accelerates: Q2 GDP Forecast To Drop More Than 1%

Italian Economic Deterioration Accelerates: Q2 GDP Forecast To Drop More Than 1% | Binterest | Scoop.it

Overnight we got some good news on Italian industrial production. Well, get ready to scrap them as according to Italian Trade Union Confindustria, and validating the collapse as predicted by PMI indicators, Italy's Q2 GDP is now expected to shrink more than 1% in Q2: the worst print since 2009, cementing the country's "double dip", and that real-time industrial output in April, now that LTRO has fizzled, is expected to fall 0.6%.

Bergamo, Italy, a Medieval Town of Art and Architecture Near Milan

Bergamo, Italy, a Medieval Town of Art and Architecture Near Milan | Binterest | Scoop.it

The moon gently illuminated Piazza Vecchia, in the northern Italian town of Bergamo, one late October evening. Shadows speckled Renaissance-era buildings, houses with wrought-iron balconies and grand arched columns, while light created a glimmering sheen over the red brick squares of the plaza. From a 12th-century bell tower came the final echoes of the 100 tolls that once signified this town’s 10 p.m. curfew.

Vintage Mugshots from the 1920s

Vintage Mugshots from the 1920s | Binterest | Scoop.it

The Sifter recently stumbled upon an incredible collection of vintage mugshots housed by the Historic Houses Trust. Many of these intriguing photographs are also accompanied by a description of the person and the crime(s) they have committed. For example, the image above of Mr. William Stanley Moore was taken May 1st, 1925. The caption describes him as: an opium dealer operating with large quantities of faked opium and cocaine. Also a wharf labourer and associates with water front thieves and drug traders.
The images themselves are of excellent quality, beautifully composed and in many cases, quite artistic. Please enjoy this curated selection of 30 photographs along with brief descriptions of each when available. (via http://nomfup.wordpress.com/)

Think BYOD is an issue? Wait for Stealth IT

Think BYOD is an issue? Wait for Stealth IT | Binterest | Scoop.it

A much more common trend is that internal IT staff find a problem. They need more computing power, or more storage, or some outside analytical tool. Getting approval for this can often be complicated, sometimes for good reasons (i.e. security) sometimes for less good reasons (i.e. inertia and bureaucracy). Faced with a real-world problem to solve, these tech-savvy staff suffer from insufficient resources. So instead, they turn to some of the publicly available resources. The best-known of these is probably Amazon’s Web Services (AWS), but there are many, many more. … Often these expenses can be camouflaged by use of personal credit cards, or expensed as technical manuals. After all, the expense line on the credit card bill just says ‘Amazon’. A few hours of Amazon compute time typically results in two digit bill.
