Improvisation Blog: Universities Compromised? The separation between form and function in Higher Education via | bini2bini | Scoop.it

Andrew McGettigan has been drawing attention to a worrying trend of disestablishing Higher Education Institutions recently. The first example of its kind was the effective dissolution of the City of Leeds College of Music (see http://andrewmcgettigan.org/2011/08/31/leeds-college-of-music-dissolved/), which was transformed into a private company called Leeds College of Music Ltd, a subsidiary of Leeds City College. [I have a personal interest in this because I used to work there]

In a bar in Istanbul, sitting on the outdoor patio, my friend and I were offered a puff of nargile, a Turkish water pipe, from the friendly group at the table next to ours. “Oh, no thanks,” I said, crossing my hands like an X in front of me, “I’m sick.” They smirked and laughed, and turned away.

Why Mexico Isn't Central America, And Other Things I Learned From Writing A Book About Cheese

Why Mexico Isn't Central America, And Other Things I Learned From Writing A Book About Cheese | bini2bini | Scoop.it

EExactly one year ago, I was embroiled in final edits on my first book, "Cheese for Dummies." It's a 408-page, comprehensive primer on all things cheese, including an extensive geography section.

I was reviewing the "America's" chapter, when I saw that my editor had taken the liberty of relocating Mexico from North America, and lumped it with Central America. Baffled, I spent the next hour researching, then polled my Gadling teammates; we are, after all, a well-traveled bunch. The consensus, of which I was already certain from years spent backpacking throughout Latin America: my editor was wrong, wrong, wrong.

3 Benefits of Second-Language Learning - Free Resources for Spanish Teachers | bini2bini | Scoop.it

While education research has long suggested that studying second languages in K12 schools boosts student achievement in other content areas, the current testing emphases on mathematics and reading has placed foreign language instruction relatively low on district priority lists. However, a growing body of research indicates that second-language learning should be bumped up significantly, as demonstrated particularly in the following areas.

What’s the Business Model for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)? And What Does Online Education Mean for the Structure of Higher Education?

What’s the Business Model for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)? And What Does Online Education Mean for the Structure of Higher Education? | bini2bini | Scoop.it

Melissa Korn and Jennifer Levitz ask a good question in a news article about so-called “Massive Open Online Courses” in today’s Wall Street Journal: what’s the business model?  How do they generate revenues?  There is a lot of discussion about how online education is going to shake up the cosseted business models of today’s brick and mortar universities, and MOOCs are often raised as a first wave of change.

Another excellent article about the future of MOOCs. It's definitely a growing business, whether it's internally in higher ed or going corporate. This article also stresses the challenges in providing the same quality content as the classroom experience. Definitely a must-read.

Video: snowboarding through downtown Montreal. Extra cool video!!! | bini2bini | Scoop.it

Snowboarding through downtown Montreal isn't exactly a common sight, but judging from thevideo below maybe it should be. This wonderful short film follows snowboarder Seb Toots as he starts at the top of Mt. Royal, a park located not far from the heart of the city, and glides down its slopes right onto the streets below. Along the way he shreds fresh powder, rides handrails and jumps a variety of obstacles. I don't exactly expect urban snowboarding to become a full-fledged sport, but it sure looks like fun.

I can't get enough of the videos from The Perennial Plate and this newest video, "Where The Water Settles," just reiterates that fact for me. The way in which Daniel Klein and Mirra Fine approach traveling is rewarding for their audience. They dive into culture based off of personal interactions and stories they hear along the way, it seems, opposed to shallow suppositions of what to do in certain areas of the world. These two clearly love the art of exploring their subjects in depth and this method can easily be observed in "Where The Water Settles," a video that takes you through a 1300-year-old system of rice farming inChina in just a few minutes.

How the internet is changing English

How the internet is changing English | bini2bini | Scoop.it

Unesco estimates that half of the world's 6,000 languages will have disappeared by the end of the century - but new research shows that social media and text messaging in particular are promoting and supporting language diversity.

Texting is now conducted by speakers of around 5,000 languages.

"Text messaging is the most linguistically diverse form of written communication that has ever existed," says Munroe.

"It's also become the first form of written communication of many of the world's languages," he says.

"Most have only ever been spoken. But the technology and economics of text messages and the proliferation of cells phones means it's the most economic option of communication."
