Arup uses 3D printing to fabricate one-of-a-kind structural steel components

Arup uses 3D printing to fabricate one-of-a-kind structural steel components | BIM&Structures | Scoop.it
Using the latest 3D printing techniques, or more accurately, "additive manufacturing," the Arup team has produced a design method for critical structural steel elements for use in complex projects. The work signals a whole new direction for the use of additive manufacturing in the field of construction and engineering. The research also shows that additive manufacturing has the potential to reduce costs, cut waste and slash the carbon footprint of the construction sector.

Revit Multistorey Stairs, Method-1

Revit Multistorey Stairs, Method-1 | BIM&Structures | Scoop.it

With the new component based stair tools in Revit v2013 (and onwards) there are now three distinct ways to create multistorey stairs.

Each method has its pros and cons. Here I will deal with method 1, which uses the old “Multistory Top Level” setting.....

Revit Stair Landings - Part 1: Creation

Revit Stair Landings - Part 1: Creation | BIM&Structures | Scoop.it

As part of the new (in v2013) component based stairs,  landings between runs are one of the component types.  They are pretty straightforward to create, but there are a couple of little tricks described below.  Modifying them is more complicated, and that will be covered in another post.

Landings – can be created by several methods:

Free HatchKit Add-In: Manage Hatch Patterns in Autodesk Revit

Free HatchKit Add-In: Manage Hatch Patterns in Autodesk Revit | BIM&Structures | Scoop.it

he HatchKit Add-In provides hatch pattern management to Revit® and directly interfaces to an installed HatchKit (v2.7 or later) for further functionality.

Use the HatchKit Add-In to manage a project's currently loaded patterns:

view large, zoomable pattern samples with a doubleclickedit a pattern's name, type and orientation directly within the displayed table.delete individual patterns from the project (excepting SOLID).purge all unused patterns from the project.

Where HatchKit 2.7 or later is installed, the HatchKit Add-In detects its presence and directly loads
patterns as arranged by HatchKit from templates drawn in Revit®,
as generated by the new HatchKit Brick+Tile Wizard,
as drawn entirely within HatchKit or as loaded from external .PAT files.
Additionally, any project pattern can be exported to an external .PAT file.

Of particular note, the Add-In bypasses the Revit Hatch Import wizard so no scale upper limit is
imposed on any pattern loaded. Very large fill patterns are now available to Revit.....

This free add-in may be downloaded from the Autodesk Exchange Apps website.

Navistools - Tools for BIM

Navistools - Tools for BIM | BIM&Structures | Scoop.it

Profox, an Autodesk partner, has developed a set of tools to enable and support your collaborative BIM processes and provide asset and facilities management throughout your project lifecycle.

Integrated with Autodesk Navisworks, Navistools allows additional project information to be added and linked to your Navisworks model.

This additional data is held in a separate, relational database that can bring together many forms of data and which is available throughout the entire lifecycle from construction to operation and decommissioning.

Information in the database can be organised, embedded in the model, and extracted to reports or external systems.

Additional modules of Navistools enable automated publishing of Navisworks project data, smarter management of point cloud data in Navisworks, on-site data capture using our Navistools Field application, and easy client-handover of Navisworks-based projects using Navistools Project Export.

Navistools can help streamline your BIM processes, leading to reduced project timescales, reduced re-work, quicker access to project data, and easier collaboration—all leading to reduced project costs....

Solar Analysis plugin now available for Revit

Solar Analysis plugin now available for Revit | BIM&Structures | Scoop.it

Analysis data now speaks the language of the Architect.

With Solar Analysis for Revit, you can quickly, easily, and iteratively perform and visualize solar impacts on the faces of mass models in Autodesk Revit 2014 and 2015.

Using the free Solar Analysis for Revit technology preview, you can visualize and quantify the distribution and intensity of solar radiation on various areas of a mass, taking into account the shading effects from adjacent objects, such as vegetation and surrounding buildings in an urban setting. It can also help with shading device design (effective strategies in blocking unwanted solar radiation) and aperture placement (allowing wanted solar radiation), or PV panel layout and analysis.

Get the free Autodesk Labs preview release right here:

Affordable Conflict Checking Software from Tekla

Affordable Conflict Checking Software from Tekla | BIM&Structures | Scoop.it

The review of models for clash and collision detection is a major consideration in the use of Building Information Modeling.  There is a now a FREE product on the market which will perform conflict checking of your 3-Dimensional models.  This product is from Tekla, Inc and is called Tekla BIMsight.

This is a basic clash detection software that allows you to bring several different 3-D models together for project collaboration and collision detection.  It is not the robust software of Navisworks® Manage, but you shouldn’t expect that capability with a free product.  You can load several different files in the program and then save that model as a “package” with a file extension of *.tbp so that the model can be reviewed again when updated files are received.....

What Revit Wants: Select by Parameter addin (free)

What Revit Wants: Select by Parameter addin (free) | BIM&Structures | Scoop.it

Sometimes you just need to hear an idea and you innately know "this is going to be useful..."

Quick Select command for Autodesk® Revit® to select by element type and its properties. Expand the element or family type and select the properties that you wish to filter by. Click OK and all those elements will be selected.

When in “Or” mode, the command will select all elements that match any of the properties. When in “And” mode, the command will only select elements that match all the selected properties.

Example of potential uses:

select all Casework on a particular Level - doneselect all Filled Regions with a given area - doneselect all Walls whose Top is Attached - done

As with most addins I post about - its free.  Download on Exchange at:

Revit Structure 2014 and Tekla Structures 19.1

Revit Structure 2014 and Tekla Structures 19.1 | BIM&Structures | Scoop.it

Since the first batch of tests I ran back in May things have improved with the IFC import and export and this of course affects how we can share models between Tekla Structures and Revit. In previous versions Tekla have supplied a Revit add-in to import and export a Tekla model, this was using IFC. As you will read from my previous post this was not always that successful. All the problems now seem to be fixed with the new Revit 2014 IFC import and export. I have tested the IFC import and export and also the CIM steel import from Tekla Structures 19.1 to Revit Structure 2014. Unfortunately the SDNF import does not seem to work with either V2.0 or V3.0........
