Creating a Detailed Quantity Takeoff in Navisworks

In these tutorials you will learn how to perform design coordination for a multidisciplinary construction project, including techniques such as clash detection, digital RFIs, and 4D construction simulations. Furthermore, you will learn how to add construction detail to design models and to use that improved detail in developing more accurate schedules and detailed quantity take offs.

There are companion exercises and datasets that allow you to practice the techniques laid out in the tutorials.

Very nice end demo showing what can be done by overlaying a BIM model with your building "reality".

This example seems to use computer vision (point clouds, 3D reconstruction, 6DOF feature based tracking) and then combines this with best location information (WLAN and HAIP locaitoning).

The result looks great. Very good example of the end goal. You can imagine the usefulness of such technology - for construction, architecture, facility management, consumer interaction, ...

Now if only we can make it work on a standard iPad! (which happens to be one of the things we are working on at 4D Pipeline  :-))

4Projects BIM in a Browser

4Projects BIM in a Browser | BIM News | Scoop.it

Cloud-based collaboration specialist 4Projects recently added ‘BIM’ support to its range of services. The new technology delivers a suite of BIM viewing, adata management tools

Cloud-based collaboration for the construction industry used to be all about document distribution, project management, and procurement. In 2011, however, everything changed.

With the UK Government Construction Strategy suddenly putting Building Information Modelling (BIM) firmly on the agenda, getting some kind of BIM capability soon became a number one priority for many of the software developers in this space.....

Revit Add-Ons: SOFiSTiK 3D-PDF Export 2014

Revit Add-Ons: SOFiSTiK 3D-PDF Export 2014 | BIM News | Scoop.it

3D PDF files are a convenient medium to exchange information between different actors in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process, since they are commonly used almost everywhere and constitute a multiplatform mean of communication.

SOFiSTiK 3D-PDF Export extends the functionalities of Revit® through the generation of standard PDF documents with embedded 3D graphics; the files produced by the program can be opened by any PDF reader that supports the PDF 1.6 standard, such as Adobe Reader 7.0 or later. SOFiSTiK 3D-PDF Export uses the geometric definition of the elements in order to create an equivalent representation of the model in U3D format. Descriptive information about the particular Revit® objects is embedded....

Revit Advanced Scheduling: Check This Model

Revit Advanced Scheduling: Check This Model | BIM News | Scoop.it

Something I haven't found in any of the templates, standards, libraries, or any other resource I've seen in the last few years is Rule-Based Model Checking. And I don't mean "why doesn't my foundation show up in a schedule?" kind of Model Checking. I mean the real deal. Does my design meet the Building Code standards for the amount of toilets? Does my bedroom have the legally required width and area? Is the egress width of this fire door big enough compared to the size of the fire compartment(s) adjacent to it? Those are all questions Revit can answer, if you know how to leverage schedules....

Green Innovation: First Bio-building Powered by Algae Opens in Hamburg

Green Innovation: First Bio-building Powered by Algae Opens in Hamburg | BIM News | Scoop.it

The world's first algae-powered building is being piloted in Hamburg.

Designed by multinational firm Arup, features panel glass bioreactors on a facade containing microalgae that generate biomass and heat, serving as a renewable energy source.

The systems provide insulation for the building- 129 bioreactors have been fitted to the southwest and southeast faces of the building. They are controlled by an energy management center in which solar thermal heat and algae are harvested and stored to be used to create hot water.

Jan Wurm, Arup’s Europe Research Leader, said: 'Using bio-chemical processes in the facade of a building to create shade and energy is a really innovative concept.

'It might well become a sustainable solution for energy production in urban areas, so it is great to see it being tested in a real-life scenario.'

The news comes after Arup announced their vision for the future of skyscrapers which suggested that buildings would be 'living' buildings powered by algae that respond automatically to the weather and the changing needs of inhabitants...

As significant as the improvements to the Revit 2014 platform are, we are surprised to see so little talk about what we think is a much bigger announcement: the availability of ReCap Studio and ReCap Photo. Collaboration, Life of a 3D PDF in the AEC Industry

3D PDF Collaboration in the AEC Industry

Jed Fisher's curator insight, March 12, 2013 6:32 PM

It's so interesting that the 3D PDF format that my team at Right Hemisphere helped create and establish with Adobe, is now, years later making a resurgence.

While I was VP Engineering at Right Hemisphere we partnered up with Adobe to create this 3D PDF standard and add support to Adobe Acrobat. The technology was (and still is) pretty good, the key however is that PDF makes so much sense as a collaboration standard, all it was missing was 3D, so this is why we added it.

Unfortunately since then Adobe seems to have near abandoned support for authoring the format. It's still a published Standard but Adobe hasn't added support to their iOS mobile viewer (which today is near essential). Thankfully however Techsoft3D has stepped up and is supporting it and providing a library for 3D PDF publishing.

In addition, there are other providers like Quadrispace and Tetra4D providing products to help create 3D PDFs.

Right Hemisphere in the meantime has been purchased by SAP and is now powering the SAP Visual Enterprise. They also have some excellent products that are well worth a review (which also publish high quality collaborative 3D PDFs).
