Standardized Building Information Exchange with COBie

Standardized Building Information Exchange with COBie | BIM Design & Engineering | Scoop.it

BIM is being used across building design and construction projects for a long time now. Earlier, when implementing BIM solutions for construction projects was relatively low, a lot was said about why the BIM uptake is slow and why businesses are reluctant in adopting BIM. In addition to lack of knowledge and training and lack of BIM expertise across the industry; an important point that was raised, was lack of standards.

Revit Structure Tutorial – Create Parts and Divide

Revit Structure Tutorial – Create Parts and Divide | BIM Design & Engineering | Scoop.it

Quite often in structural projects you may be required to turn an in situ element into multiple pre cast elements, a typical example is perhaps a wall. In this short tutorial we will take a look at the use of parts to divide an in situ wall into pre cast sandwich panels that Revit can then schedule and tag...

Boost Facility Management Outcomes - BIM Maturity Level 3 Explained

Boost Facility Management Outcomes - BIM Maturity Level 3 Explained | BIM Design & Engineering | Scoop.it

Building and construction industry has been passing through an evolutionary phase – There are countless technologies that are entering into the arena; in fact, most of them have been instrumental in changing face of the industry.  Of these numerous technologies, Building Information Modeling or BIM has proved to be ‘the game-changer’ in all sense. This process of creating a digital prototype of a building has improved the flow of data through the building process, and, therefore, ensure extreme efficiencies.

From the BIM One website...

SYNCHRONIZE DATA BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN REVIT AND EXCEL

The Import/export Excel allows you to synchronize data back and forth between Revit and Excel. It also means you can alleviate the data management process by delegating tasks related to the model to team members that don’t use the model. You can export schedules as well as Revit standards to manage them in Excel. Once modified, you import the data back to Revit and your schedules or standards are going to be updated.

Different BIMs for different Purposes

Different BIMs for different Purposes | BIM Design & Engineering | Scoop.it

How does BIM work, like really work, in the real world?

There are a proliferation of diagrams with arrows and graphics invariably arranged in a circle, or as a seamless flow.

But none of these are explanations of how BIM actually works, they are blueprints of how the authors think BIM should work.
It is an attempt to promote the myth that "BIM is about process, not technology", so that you will use the standard, guide, paid advice or academic career being pushed.

BIM does involve some new and different processes, but try doing it without technology. It would go from being a highly efficient process to one that involves an enormous amount of  work and time that is error prone and tedious. Basically the benefits would evaporate...

BIM for reinforced concrete - it's in the details

BIM for reinforced concrete - it's in the details | BIM Design & Engineering | Scoop.it

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a critical part of how structural building and infrastructure systems are designed and built today, but the reinforced concrete industry has been lagging behind structural steel when it comes to its adoption of BIM. This is due to the highly fragmented nature of its supply chain which requires a number of different designers and suppliers to collaborate and simultaneously deliver the final product. Nowhere is this more apparent than in our conversations with Autodesk users. In fact, when we ask our users what they want to see in a BIM-centric solution for concrete, we often hear a variety of answers that differ drastically depending on someone’s role on a project.

Automated diffuser placement in early stage MEP design - YouTube

Since the introduction of Dynamo an open source graphical programming tool for Revit. A series of thought on how this computational design tool can be utilized in the MEP part of a design project, has been circling in my mind.

This has led to me setting up a number challenges for myself, in order to investigate the possibilities of visual programming in MEP design.

A logic step #1 seems to be automating time consuming tedious tasks.

Challenge #1 Automate the layout of dummy diffusers so the main duct system can be sized early in the design stage.

So to break down the challenge into something more tangible; Place a dummy diffuser in all spaces that needs supply air, pick up the specified supply airflow from the space and assign that to the diffuser airflow.

In Dynamo that means that I will have to create a list of all spaces in the file, filter out the spaces that are unconditioned, determine the center point of the rest of the spaces and place a diffuser there, read the specified supply airflow from each space and set the value of the diffuser airflow to that.

Proof of concept can be watched here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0gxSCrfqF0
