Radio: The Social Media | The Radio Agency | Bilingual News for Students | Scoop.it

Since the dawn of man, one form of advertising has reigned supreme. Word of mouth...

The irony of all this? Radio was the FIRST Social Media. In the early days, listening to the radio was a social event. Groups would gather round the radio for any and all events. FDR fireside chats. The Hindenburg disaster. Texaco Star Theater...

Radio is taking Social Media platforms and working with them to give listeners more access than ever before.

Social Media, in all its forms is not going away. Sure it’ll evolve and grow as it already has. Radio, the granddaddy of them all, if I may borrow a phrase, has embraced Social Media, coming up with new and creative ways to reach people. And in the end that makes us all winners.

Car bosses predict that the next generation of vehicles with standard in-built internet access is close to becoming reality.

The survey by KPMG looking at future trends shows speech recognition and internet connection with wi-fi and 3G will become the norm.

More than a third (37%) of the 200 car executives believe "infotainment" in cars is nearly as important as car safety.

Car manufacturers will also join forces with music, telecoms and IT companies.

UNESCO Turns On the Radio: World Radio Day, Feb. 12, 2012 | IPS ipsnews.net | Bilingual News for Students | Scoop.it

PARIS, Nov 11 , 2011 (IPS) - The demise of radio has been predicted for many years, but the medium is adapting, transforming and proving to be a cost-effective tool in development, experts say.

"Radio is cheap, portable and has enormous potential for local and national growth," says Mirta Lourenço, chief of the media development section of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The Paris-based agency this week approved a proposal from Spain to proclaim an annual World Radio Day set for Feb. 13 which will be observed in a variety of ways by UNESCO’s 195 member states.

"The aim is to promote community radio and also to celebrate the service radio provides," Lourenço told IPS. "It was felt that radio had not been adequately recognised for its many services to humankind."

Why Curation Is Important to the Future of Journalism

Why Curation Is Important to the Future of Journalism  | Bilingual News for Students | Scoop.it

Excerpted from the article:

"The concept of curating news is not new. One can look to the supply-chain process of a news organization to see that several roles (editor, managing editor, etc.) have curation as a core competency; that is, the organizing of information filed by reporters into a deliverable packages for readers.

But with the push of social media and advancements in communications technology, the curator has become a journalist by proxy. They are not on the front lines, covering a particular beat or industry, or filing a story themselves, but they are responding to a reader need. With a torrent of content emanating from innumerable sources.

Curators help navigate readers through the vast ocean of content, and while doing so, create a following based on several factors: trust, taste and tools.

Unlike a reporter who is immersed in a particular industry or beat, a curator (as me) often has a day job. Some are in the media industry and have access to their publication’s news sources; others are obsessed with the news and want to provide their network, community or followers with what they think is important. But the common thread between curators is that they are viewed as trustworthy sources of information.

Curators should have more freedoms than traditional reporters in a couple senses, in that part of the appeal of good curation is that it carries the person’s footprint. Opinion isn’t really a bad thing, and in fact gives the content shape in this context.”

Les webradios au Radio! 2012 | Radioexpertise | Bilingual News for Students | Scoop.it

New Website Connects Language Newbies With Native Speakers

New Website Connects Language Newbies With Native Speakers | Bilingual News for Students | Scoop.it

Verbling is a website where language learners can practice with each other through live video chats.

Quick Pitch: Verbling is a web-based platform where individuals can pair up with native speakers to practice speaking new languages on live video.

Genius Idea: Verbling makes language learning easy by offering a free way to connect instantly with native speakers with timed prompts and conversation-starting topics.

Verbling was launched in 2011 when co-founders Jacob Jolis and Mikael Bernstein met while attending Stanford University. The two dropped out of the prestigious school and teamed up with then-Google software engineer Fred Wulff to build the language-learning startup of their dreams.

Verbling.com, a Y Combinator-backed startup, is a website that people can access globally to speak with native language speakers living in different countries.

For now, only Spanish and English speakers can access video chat, but the founders hope to add Arabic, French, Chinese and German — among 10 languages in total — by the end of the year.

The idea of Verbling is to solve one of the biggest problems for language learners — not being able to practice speaking with natives. People devote time and money to learning language basics, but slowly lose linguistic skills without practice.

“It’s very difficult to find native speakers without going abroad,” said Bernstein who speaks English, Swedish, German and Russian. “With Verbling, you can do that instantaneously. You don’t have to schedule or waste any time trying to find someone.”

Verbling is all about the trade. Convenient prompts with the in-browser video chats lets users know when to speak in one language and when to switch to another language. Each language is spoken for five minutes at a time, making sure both participants get the practice they are looking for.

Participants are matched up automatically. The company currently doesn’t connect people based on age, gender or location, but may be willing to consider it in the future. The founders read emails and feedback from all users and will implement suggestions as the product continues to be developed.

During the chat, there are buttons users can use to display conversation topics for beginners, intermediate learners and advanced speakers. Then you can “super-like,” “like,” or “dislike” the conversation when it ends. This will determine who you will be matched up with next time. Mutual good reviews will prompt users to be linked up for a second or third conversation.

Users are automatically matched up with a native speaker. If you speak English and are looking to practice Spanish, you’ll be connected with someone from Spain or South America, says Bernstein.

| LesNouvellesRSS.com | Bilingual News for Students | Scoop.it
