St. Paul to unveil bike plan adding 214 bikeway miles - TwinCities.com

St. Paul to unveil bike plan adding 214 bikeway miles - TwinCities.com | Biking and Trail Running | Scoop.it
In the 1880s, a student disciple of famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted envisioned a giant figure "8" encircling Minneapolis and St. Paul, crisscrossing the two cities with a continuity of trails.
Glenn's insight:

Nice. St Paul is not sitting back and taking it easy after its 1st place designation (with Minneapolis) for the most fit city in the US.

Given the large cost, I hope that they are doing some sort of analysis to see if the routes would be used and what type of traffic it would be (commuters, weekend warriors, or families).  My personal take is not to mix things up -- if they build routes in the downtown area, they should be specifically for commuting purposes and have the additional safety concerns with all of the hurried traffic.

Also, don't do any favors that just mess up vehicle commuting. Adding a bike lane at the expense of a driving lane on Montreal Ave as it goes down towards 7th St (and ended before getting to the intersection) was for traffic control, not about bikes.

Maintenance, visibility the keys to safe winter biking
University of Pittsburgh The Pitt News
Icy turns, snow-encrusted bike lanes and the creepy way that cars refuse to pass you during winter are just the beginning.
Glenn's insight:

Winter biking isn't for everyone, with good reason. Good quick points on maintaing your bike and dealing with traffic situations in this article. I definitely agree with the sentiment that the vehicle has a good 2000 lb advantage over you, even if you do have the right-of-way!

Seeing some of the best runners in the world (prize money brought in the "B" teams) was amazing. Many of these elite runners were in our hotal and were more than willing to talk with us. An experience I won't forget.

Ultra-runners may hold clues to limits of human capabilities

There can't possibly be many people in the world who would find hours of running to be "very relaxing." But Rhodes is an ultra-runner.
Glenn's insight:

Excellent quote at the very end of this article:

"Running these distances, it just makes you feel bulletproof, like there's nothing in the world you can't accomplish," he said. "As absolutely ragged and worn out you feel at the time, there's also this amazing feeling I can't put into words."

And as this article starts out with, some people find running akin to meditation. I go a very different route and try to accomplish the "2 birds with 1 stone" goal.  In another article that just came out, "The typical American adult read or listened to 5 books in the past year, and the average for all adults was 12 books." (http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2014/E-Reading-Update/Overview.aspx)  By listening to audiobooks while running, I can easily go through 40-50 books a year.

Down 'n' Dirty: Trail Racing vs.
Glenn's insight:

Nice starter article for trail running.

My own perspective on trail running -- don't do it!!! Why? Because it will make your road races and training boring! I thorughly enjoy road biking, I deal with road running (and the impact on the body), but now put trail running up there with an addiction.  Fortunately, there aren't many long trails by where I live, otherwise who knows when I'd be heard from again. :)

New Study On Ultra Marathoners Could Have Important Implications On ...
Glenn's insight:

Scott Bickard, the author the article, gets it statistically with this report. His ice cream sales/increased crime rate is a great example.

I think that as people run more distances, it is their personality to push and push, to the point that they can cause injury. I'm a good example, just coming off of achilles tendinitis due to pushing too hard too soon after an ultra.

In my opinion, "risk" can be mitigated by good training, concentration, and being in tune with the limits of your body (and knowing when and how much to push those limits).

New research shows ultra marathons could add 16 years to your life | Biking and Trail Running | Scoop.it
EXCLUSIVE: ULTRA Marathon running appears to have the extraordinary effect of extending life by up to 16 years.

Via Andy Dorn
Glenn's insight:

This is great in theory, but I learned long ago that correlation does not mean causation!  Maybe these better telomeres help people stay sufficiently fit that they could even comtemplate running an ultra. Still, as long as someone stays safe while exercising, having a more fit body means better recovery from illness and an increased awareness of other healthy lifestyle habits.
