Worlds apart: Indigenous leaders abandon faith in UN to find climate solution. — The Daily Climate

Worlds apart: Indigenous leaders abandon faith in UN to find climate solution. — The Daily Climate | Biidaajimowin Baakiiginigan | Scoop.it
Robert DesJarlait's insight:

Sometimes someone on Facebook will suggest taking indigenous environmental concerns and issues to the U.N. For what reason? Do they seriously think the U.N. will address our issues? Do they really think the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is going to provide any measure of protection? Do they really think the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous People is going to resolve our human rights and the environmental rights of our homelands? How can one expect any measure of justice from an organization composed of nation states that are economically controlled by multi-national, corporate congomerates whose intent is to rip asunder the earth and seize metallic and mineral resources to enrich their coffers. Do you really think that the U.N. nations states care anything about you, your traditions, your cultures, your languages? The wise man thinks twice because the first thought may be distorted by a cracked mirror.

Seminole Student Sent Home to Cut Hair, Parents Say It’s Against His Religion | Biidaajimowin Baakiiginigan | Scoop.it
SEMINOLE - When all other Seminole students were headed to their first day of school on Monday, one little boy was sent home because his hair was too long. The five-year-old boy, Malachi Wilson, is a part of the Navajo Nation, and according to his parents it’s against their religion to cut his hair.

“Sometimes the law is an ass” - Two Row Times

“Sometimes the law is an ass” - Two Row Times | Biidaajimowin Baakiiginigan | Scoop.it
With Respect to All my Relations Let’s be clear here, the Kahnawà:ke residency Law that states anyone who marries a non-Mohawk or non-“Indian” automatically has to leave: “you marry out stay out”; this is not a Mohawk law but colonial assimilation rhetoric implementing the Indian Act’s policy. I want to address this issue because it …
Robert DesJarlait's insight:

This colonial policy exists on reservations in the U.S. I know that at Red Lake, if you marry a non-Native or non-Red Lake member, your home/land assignment cannot be passed to your spouse if you pass on. However, if your children are enrolled members, you can assign them as heirs to your home/land assignment, thereby keeping the house in the family. Barring non-members were a result of the treaties and the establishment of tribal rolls. Traditionally, before treaties, intermarriages were accepted and such families lived with the borders of what is now ceded lands and in the villages.

Russia Wants Bulgarians to Stop Vandalizing Soviet Monuments To Look Like American Superheroes - disinformation | Biidaajimowin Baakiiginigan | Scoop.it

n thBulgarian pranksters are repainting Soviet-era monuments so that the Soviet military heroes depicted are recast as American Superheroes.

Robert DesJarlait's insight:

Excellent...tagging at its best. Maybe some could tag the Columbus statue on the lawn of the state capitol in St. Paul. Maybe recast him as a Native SiouxperMan. On the other hand, a bucket of red paint, to symbolize blood, would work equally well.

Epic: Ferguson Protesters Just Told Jesse Jackson To Shove It After He Got Greedy | Biidaajimowin Baakiiginigan | Scoop.it
"That man isn't a community leader, he's a vulture..."
Robert DesJarlait's insight:

SMH. Jackson (and Al Sharpton) are sloppy seconds in the civil rights movement. In his younger days, Jackson may have had some effectiveness. But nowadays, his soapbox is made of money. Jackson and Sharpton - the Show Me The Money Boyz. These aged "community leaders" from the 70s in the black and indigenous communities need to step down from their ego soapboxes and let the youngbloods take over.

How Did the Head of the New Black Panther Party Become a Peacemaker in Ferguson? | Biidaajimowin Baakiiginigan | Scoop.it
I keep linking to Emily Wax-Thibodeaux and DeNeen L. Brown's amazing story about the internal divisions among Ferguson protesters. Elder and traditional dancer Mavis Drift, Bois Forte Ojibwe, is just one of many featured on murals in Virginia, Minnesota.
Robert DesJarlait's insight:

Beautiful close-up of Mavis Drift, a respected elder and jingle dress dancer. Of particular note is the aesthetic, style  and palette of mural artist Sue Martinsen. Bold, sweeping applications of paint to convey depth, shadows, and light. Outstanding work by the artist.

Melvin Eagle was keeper of culture

Melvin Eagle was keeper of culture | Biidaajimowin Baakiiginigan | Scoop.it
It is a marvel to many Ojibwe people how a community like Neyaashiing on the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation could be so successful in maintaining their culture. They’ve fared better than most of their neighbors in this regard in spite of the fact that they are located a little over 100 miles from Minneapolis and have a small population surrounded by a sea of white resorts, hotels and summer homes. They’ve managed to keep Big Drum culture in particular flourishing despite consistent efforts to remove them from their homeland, including the burning of their homes in 1901 and the withholding of allotments for all who did not relocate to White Earth until 1926.

Bob Marley, genomics, and a rare form of melanoma

Bob Marley, genomics, and a rare form of melanoma | Biidaajimowin Baakiiginigan | Scoop.it
Our researchers in Manchester are using the power of DNA technology to study the genetic faults in the rare type of melanoma that killed Bob Marley.
Robert DesJarlait's insight:

Interesting article on Bob Marley and cancer. Some cannabis-as-cancer-cure advocates promote the notion that smoking cannabis prevents cancer. Marley was, of course, a prolific user of cannabis. His body was a repository for THC and CBD - yet, that did nothing to prevent his cancer. And, after he contracted cancer, his cannabis use did nothing to help "cure" his cancer.
