Cette étude a été menée dans le but de comprendre comment les technologies de l'information (TI) offrent de nouvelles opportunités aux entreprises, en se concentrant particulièrement sur le rôle joué par ces solutions dans le traitement et l'utilisation des données numériques. Les données numériques sont au centre de ce projet, en raison des opportunités qu'elles peuvent apporter aux entreprises : elles se sont transformées en un torrent inondant tous les secteurs de l'économie mondiale.

This report is the output of a research project co-financed by Grenoble Ecole de Management and Rhône Alpes French region. This study was conducted with the aim of understanding how Information Technology (IT) provides new opportunities to firms, specifically focusing on the role that such solutions play in the process and usage of digital data.
Digital data are the focus of this project since data can provide new opportunities for firms: they have become a torrent flowing into every area of the global economy. In such a context, companies may have to deal with a high volume of transactional data, capturing trillions of bytes of information about their customers, suppliers, and operations.

The development of the DDG-capability in firms: An evaluation of its impact on firm financial performance

This paper examines whether firms that develop the Digital Data Genesis dynamic capability show higher performance. Using detailed survey data on the capabilities developed by companies by the usage of digital data and firm financial performance of 96 firms, we find that the firms that develop the DDG dynamic capability have levels of ROA, ROS and revenue growth higher than others do. Our results provide one of the first empirical evidence on the direct link between DDG dynamic capability and firm financial performance

Parmi les secteurs d’avenir, le Big Data, ou la « valorisation des données massives », se positionne dans le peloton de tête.
Le rapport de la commission Innovation 2030, présidée par Anne Lauvergeon, le place même parmi les sept ambitions pour la France. Or, le pays va être confronté à une pénurie de personnes formées sur le sujet.
Pour remédier à ce déficit de compétences, Grenoble Ecole de Management et l’Ensimag s’engagent à ouvrir une formation spécialisée pour la rentrée 2014.

They end with recommendations for developing the needed skills, examining current opportunities, creating digital data streams when opportunities arise, and being alert to the digital data streams you already have.

Gaining Competitive Advantage from Digital Data Genesis Dynamic Capability: the Moderating Role of Environmental Turbulence

Dynamic Capabilities are often considered as the factor justifying the different degrees of success of organizations in turbulent environment. In this pa-per we investigate whether companies that have achieved a Digital Data Genesis dynamic capability hold an IT-based competitive advantage. Further, we evaluate whether environmental turbulence has a moderating effect on this relationship. We based our findings on a survey of 92 Italian companies gathering data in 2011 and 2012. We find that Digital Data Genesis Dynamic Capability has a positive influ-ence on IT-based competitive advantage and that environmental dynamism mod-erates such relationship.

Profiting from Data Harvesting and Data Streams | Big Data and Value Creation | Scoop.it

The world is changing, thanks to data. The ubiquitous, massive creation of real-time data in a natively digital form (a phenomenon known as "digital data genesis,"1 or DDG) provides unprecedented opportunities for novel value creation. Pulled by the diffusion of sensors -- and the consequential increase in the creation, storage, communication, and processing of information -- such generated data can be made readily available or streamed to other partners or appropriately transformed in customer value-added services. We define this concept as the "digital data stream," or DDS. We believe the organizational implications of both DDG and DDS are enormous but that much is still to be understood in order to profit from the harvesting and streaming of data sources. What form does value creation take today? Which activities enable these new forms of value creation? How do these new possibilities for action become tangible value propositions? In this article, using data from CBR's most recent survey, we propose some early answers to these questions, enriching the discussion with our state-of-the-art academic research.

This month's installment of CBR is also the result of experimentation. Instead of seeking to identify an issue of current interest or a current challenge our readers face, we take a look at a trend that we see emerging, even though it may not be a reality (yet) for many of our readers. This topic, that my colleague Rick Watson and I call the “digital data genesis capability,” represents the notion that organizations must, in order to stay competitive in the future, develop the ability to embed digital computing equipment and IT in organizational processes to serve goals other than transaction processing, thus creating data in digital form and capturing it at its inception.
