What Does Big Data Look Like?

What Does Big Data Look Like? | Big Data - Visual Analytics | Scoop.it

A simple Google image search on “big data” reveals numerous instances of three dimensional one’s and zero’s, a few explanatory infographics, and even the interface from The Matrix. So what does “big data” look like, within human comprehension?

Via Lauren Moss
Andreas Maniatis's insight:

How do we get to actionable analysis, deeper insight, and visually comprehensive representations of the information? The answer: we need to make data more human.

Jennifer Widom introduced the fundamental concepts and architectures of active database systems, a major area of research in the database field today. Active database systems allow application developers to embed logic into the database that allow actions to be executed when certain conditions are met. Active database systems have had a major impact on commercial database management systems, and most modern relational databases include active database features

An expensive wine is not necessarily a good wine. And here are some Visual Analytics to support that.

Science proves wine is a lovely drink surrounded by BS.
Andreas Maniatis's insight:

Therein lies the problem with wine: you have the science of turning a great fruit into a great drink. Then you have what are seemingly objective quality variables like balance and complexity. But layered onto that is a mountain of subjective opinions, people trying to prove their sophistication, and a whole lot of marketing. The nature of wine makes it really hard to tell the difference between expertise, nonsense, and personal preference.

How Not to Drown in Numbers

How Not to Drown in Numbers | Big Data - Visual Analytics | Scoop.it

BIG data will save the world. How often have we heard that over the past couple of years? We’re pretty sure both of us have said something similar dozens of times in the past few months.

Andreas Maniatis's insight:

The problem is this: The things we can measure are never exactly what we care about. Just trying to get a single, easy-to-measure number higher and higher (or lower and lower) doesn’t actually help us make the right choice. For this reason, the key question isn’t “What did I measure?” but “What did I miss?”

It’s BASIC: Arnold Spielberg and the Birth of Personal Computing

It’s BASIC: Arnold Spielberg and the Birth of Personal Computing | Big Data - Visual Analytics | Scoop.it

In the late 1950s, Arnold Spielberg, the father of Hollywood director Steven Spielberg, helped revolutionize computing when he designed the GE-225 mainframe computer. The machine allowed a team of Dartmouth University students and researchers to develop the BASIC programing language, an easy-to-use coding tool that quickly spread and ushered in the era of personal computers. (Young Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs all used the language when they started building their digital empires.)

Focus on the Right Data, Not All Data

Focus on the Right Data, Not All Data | Big Data - Visual Analytics | Scoop.it

Today only a small portion of businesses regularly merge data and physical products. Most large companies struggle to get the most out of the vast amounts of data they’ve collected. That’s because even after they determine the right ways to use information to delight their customers, managers must address one equally important challenge

Andreas Maniatis's insight:

In their hunt for an information advantage, managers — enabled by IT consultants, hardware vendors, and software providers — often simply try to capture all the data they can. But the truth is that capturing everything is almost as terrible a strategy as doing nothing at all. It’s important to capture what’s useful (or potentially useful). It’s not important to capture every possible datapoint.

The clusters and outliers suggest that for middle-income countries there is a link with open-data practices, but not among the richest countries. Likewise, some of the least corrupt countries are nevertheless middling in making their data open. The Fast Data platform, by TIBCO

The Fast Data platform, by TIBCO | Big Data - Visual Analytics | Scoop.it

Data coming from your applications, systems, processes, customers, partners— and now, the Internet of Things— fuels your business. The Fast Data Platform integrates this data to make the right information available at the right time, powering services and APIs, as well as automating processes. The Fast Data platform empowers your business by identifying situations of interest as they occur— opportunities like customer interactions and process optimization, and threats like software exceptions and security breaches— providing real-time awareness.

Andreas Maniatis's insight:

The Fast Data platform combines three major assets: your data, people, and technology, providing real-time awareness to take instant action. Your competition might have the same data. But with the ability to make informed decisions—and quickly taking action while the outcome is still in play—you can change what happens next…while your competition is still crunching their numbers.
