Follow the Ones and Zeros: How the Most Critical and Complex Big Data Around Brings Productivity and Profits

Follow the Ones and Zeros: How the Most Critical and Complex Big Data Around Brings Productivity and Profits | Big Data in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

Blowout preventers, or BOPs, are incredibly complex machines that weigh 750,000 pounds and tower 60 feet above seafloor oil wells. They serve as the last line of defense in case anything goes wrong. It takes workers about 18 months to build one and they serve for as long as 30 years.

It takes as much as $16 million to retrieve a BOP to service it, and keeping them in shape all those years can get expensive. As a rule of thumb to stay safe, maintenance crews often replace as many as 20 percent of BOP parts every time they come to the surface. The stakes are high. Each day a rig is not drilling can cost the offshore operator $3 million in lost productivity. But it also means that they effectively rebuild an entire BOP every five years...Read More....

Open, feed, cut. Such is the humdrum life of a motor molecule, the subject of new research at Rice University, that eats and excretes damaged proteins and turns them into harmless peptides for disposal.

The why is obvious: Without these trash bins, the Escherichia coli bacteria they serve would die. And thanks to Rice Univ., the how is becoming clearer... More...

Nanotechnology may be key to solar energy and energy storage

A new study from the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) in Switzerland and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI in Germany has found that nanotechnology will bring significant benefits to the energy sector, especially to energy storage and solar energy. Improved materials efficiency and reduced manufacturing costs are just two of the real economic benefits that nanotechnology already brings these fields and that’s only the beginning.

The Future of Engagement Is Big Data Plus Big Emotion

The Future of Engagement Is Big Data Plus Big Emotion | Big Data in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

in a marketing landscape fueled by technology and consumer-driven behavior, brands need to combine big data plus big emotion to engage with audiences.

The tech-led empowerment of customers will only grow as the "Internet of Things" connects everything to everyone, driving down the marginal cost of production and distribution, just as technology has done with the supply of information.

Emotional fulfillment, not technology, will be the standout offering of a winning brand. People like technology -- but people mostly really like other people. The more digital life gets, the more people will value being understood, touched and involved by other people. The brands that win will be real and personable -- whether it's a live person on screen, a physical store interaction or the mass intimacy of a stadium event, from football to rock....

Making Sense of Big Data

Making Sense of Big Data | Big Data in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

Ben Recht is looking for problems. He develops mathematical strategies to help researchers, from urban planners to online retailers, cut through blizzards of data to find what they’re after.

He resists the “needle in the haystack” metaphor because, he says, the researchers, engineers, and business people he has worked with usually don’t know enough about their data to reach their goal.

My work tries to incorporate as much expert knowledge as possible into data analysis.  Once you codify this expertise, the needle often turns out to be a pitchfork.”
