How Big Data - and Critical Thinking - Lead to Business Value

How Big Data - and Critical Thinking - Lead to Business Value | Big Data Analysis in the Clouds | Scoop.it
There is irony behind a discussion of the business value and metrics related to big data analytics, since a lot of people in the business world still don’t understand much about big data, including those who think they have a handle on it. Business analysts, IT, Marketing, Business Intelligence, Data Scientists, Upper Management -- each of these roles can have a meaningful stake in big data analytics -- and it’s likely that each role has a different idea about the impact it can have. Topic: Big Data.

The promise and perils of a datafied world

The promise and perils of a datafied world | Big Data Analysis in the Clouds | Scoop.it
Pierre Levy's insight:

First, then, a definition. Big data describes the idea that everything can be digitised and "datafied" – thanks to cheaper storage, faster processing and better algorithms. And that really means everything, from your current location or liking for strawberry pop tarts, to your propensity for misspelling and degree of personal compassion. And not just your data: everyone's data.

This changes science, say the authors, by ridding us of biased random samples and the need to massage the resulting data to make it sufficiently representative of a larger population. Could biased sample sets be at the root of many failed attempts to replicate experiments?

360 degree or 288 View of Your Customer? Big data humility

360 degree or 288 View of Your Customer? Big data humility | Big Data Analysis in the Clouds | Scoop.it
Much has been written about the power of big data collections to enable the 360 view of our customers, our business, our employees, and our processes. When our numerous disparate heterogeneous data collections are aggregated and joined in the data lake, with appropriate data tagging and data discovery tools in place (such as Apache Drill), then we can reach for that ideal: the 360 view of our domain!

Big data: are we making a big mistake? - FT.com

Big data: are we making a big mistake? - FT.com | Big Data Analysis in the Clouds | Scoop.it
Five years ago, a team of researchers from Google announced a remarkable achievement in one of the world’s top scientific journals, Nature. Without needing the results of a single medical check-up, they were nevertheless able to track the spread of

"But big data do not solve the problem that has obsessed statisticians and scientists for centuries: the problem of insight, of inferring what is going on, and figuring out how we might intervene to change a system for the better.

“We have a new resource here,” says Professor David Hand of Imperial College London. “But nobody wants ‘data’. What they want are the answers.”

To use big data to produce such answers will require large strides in statistical methods.

“It’s the wild west right now,” says Patrick Wolfe of UCL."

Kate Crawford, a researcher at Microsoft Research, calls the problem :

“Big Data fundamentalism"

— the idea with larger data sets, we get closer to objective truth.” Speaking at a conference in Berkeley, Calif., on Thursday, she identified what she calls “six myths of Big Data.”

Henri Verdier Blog: Non, les données ne sont pas du pétrole... | Big Data Analysis in the Clouds | Scoop.it
Pierre Levy's insight:
