Brainlike Computers, Learning From Experience

Brainlike Computers, Learning From Experience | Big Data | Scoop.it

Computers have entered the age when they are able to learn from their own mistakes, a development that is about to turn the digital world on its head.

Via Szabolcs Kósa
VendorFit's insight:

Artificial intelligence is the holy grail of technological achievment, creating an entity that can learn from its own mistakes and can (independently of programmer intervention) develop new routines and programs.  The New York Times claims that the first ever "learning" computer chip is to be released in 2014, an innovation that has profound consequences for the tech market.  When these devices become cheaper, this should allow for robotics and device manufacture that incorporates more detailed sensory input and can parse real objects, like faces, from background noise.

Usability, scalability hurdles could trip up OpenStack adoption

Usability, scalability hurdles could trip up OpenStack adoption | Big Data | Scoop.it
What does OpenStack need to do to achieve widespread enterprise adoption in 2014? Make it easily deployable, for starters.
VendorFit's insight:

OpenStack certainly has a crowd of devoted fans, but it hasn't had the mainstream success that many OpenStack adopters were initially expecting.  There are a number of reasons why OpenStack continues to lag behind predictions.

For one, OpenStack isn't easy to use in large businesses, because installation hurdles and scaling problems make it less usable as instance size grows.  While there are a variety of LInux distributions that are supposed to improve on these flaws, most businesses are holding out for a graphical user interface and an installation process that doesn't require third party software.

8 Industries That Could Benefit From Big Data - Infographic

8 Industries That Could Benefit From Big Data - Infographic | Big Data | Scoop.it
An infographic describing 8 industries that could benefit from big data, including how churches can use big data to connect to their members
VendorFit's insight:

Big Data is clearly important for large businesses of all types, but can it also provide advantages for non-profits and other organizations?  This Big Data Startups article suggests a number of areas that big data could help improve (for example) churches, healthcare, political campaigns, and even the war on terror.

The main advantage of big data that can be distilled from this article is the unprecedented ability to sift through quantities of data that would otherwise be unmanageable.  For example, keeping detailed statistics on players throughout their basketball careers allows team owners to build teams based on shot efficiency rather than relying on subjective (and difficult to standardize) traits and observations.

Data Storage Technologies to Watch in 2014

Software defined is a leader, as is hybrid IT and solutions that enhance mobile access to storage.

VendorFit's curator insight, February 6, 2014 1:29 PM

In the last few years, no tech industry has gone through quite as much large-scale change as the data storage industry.  As recent as five years ago, the majority of data in centers throughout the country was stored on tape drives in centralized data centers.  Now, with the advent of cheap cloud computing and the decentralization of network infrastructure, the industry is shifting to a hybrid model.

More applications will become cloud-oriented (virtualized) in the next year, although most enterprise-level companies will retain some of their IT infrastructure to create a hybrid between cloud-based and in-house services.  Solid state drives will see further growth, as people are attempting to get away from hard drives and their low reliability and high energy consumption.

InterSystems Recognized in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Operational Database ...
VendorFit's insight:

Database management is already a Herculean chore for large businesses, but it is made even more difficult when companies are trying to manage diverse and nonrelational data.  InterSystems is an operational database management company that supports new structures and non-quantitative data like XML and video content.  The recognition by Gartner is not an endorsement, but it is an acknowledgement that InterSystems has made headway in the database industry, with natural language processing that makes automated plain-text entry far easier (and more accurate) than before.  This could be especially useful for law offices and for companies with extensive customer relation management.

Remote access: Tech predictions for 2014
CIOL
BANGALORE, INDIA: Propalms Network is a leading provider of application delivery and secure remote access solutions for Terminal Services, Application Virtualization and Virtual Desktop Infrastructures.
VendorFit's insight:

The CTO of Propalms, Vijender Yadav, believes that one major trend will underly the technological innovations of 2014.  Yadav claims that remote access is one facet of the increasing move towards virtualization, yet another way for businesses to move their operations into the cloud where they can "rent" processing power rather than investing in massive hardware projects and IT departments.

Remote access is not going to be limited to the enterprise sector.  This will be the year where "smarter" virtualization strategies bring remote access to small businesses, allowing contractors to work from home and leveraging mobile devices to increase connectivity and productivity across the board.  Yadav's conclusions are valid, although his claim that "high performance desktop" setups have not been virtualized in the past is at odds with the increasing reliance of large-scale 3D shops on the Adobe Creative Cloud system.

Libraries used to essentially be warehouses for textual documents, consisting of little more than a physical index and thousands of volumes of books and periodicals.  With the advent and development of technology, libraries on university campuses have evolved to become much more comprehensive purveyors of physical and electronic intelligenc.e

At the University of Virginia, the Data Management Consulting Group was tasked with integrating databases, stored collections, physical volumes, and millions of pages of data and research.  Data Management is a growing practice at the university level, as universities have been forced to respond to increase their integration of online databases to allow more efficient research and respond to patterns in the ways that students find information.

Dealing with Unforeseen Events – How Data Virtualization Creates an Agile Environment | Sandhill

Dealing with Unforeseen Events – How Data Virtualization Creates an Agile Environment | Sandhill | Big Data | Scoop.it
Denodo Technologies discusses how data virtualization creates an agile environment when dealing with unforeseen events, minimizing impact from future disruptions.
VendorFit's insight:

Big data has a predictive capacity, allowing pattern analysis that can judge the likelihood of future events based on trends from the past.  This allows IT organizations to maintain a level of agility higher than was possible in the past, changing IT infrastructure to meet the demands of increasing usage or emergencies.

Sandhill cliams that one way to achieve this end is through the use of data virtualization, allowing real time delivery of data despite the decouping and transparency of the data in each layer of IT. AAA (the auto and travel agency in the United States) uses data virtualization to increase their ability to expand to meet new operational requirements without disruption to their business practices.

Selecting the Right Storage for Development and Testing Data Center Knowledge But to provide adequate performance for these compute-intensive processes, many organizations end up over-provisioning storage and then spend thousands of hours annually...
VendorFit's insight:

Businesses wrestle with the issue of data storage, as it usually presents an inherent trade-off between reliability and scale.  Virtualization is one solution for busineses that need a scaling solution to storage, avoiding the initial capital investment for large server banks and data centers.  Engineering and development labs need high availability and data protection, so they should look to test-type VMs or to hybrid solutions that integrate rapid flash storage with small I/O drives to provide data security.

Marketwired (press release)
SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Jan 7, 2014) - Versar, Inc.
VendorFit's insight:

In a decision with ramifications for the entire Environmental Information Management industry, Versar, Inc. selected Locus Technologies for a project to create remediation software for the United States Air force.  The Air Force seeks to increase visibility of data on environmental projects across it's numerous worldwide bases of operations, and Versar was listed as teh prime contractor with a $93M contract.  Locus technologies is a relatively small company that started in 1997 on a SaaS model, so this should compel a great deal of growth for the firm.  Government contracts are notorious for long sales cycles and careful analysis, and the commercial sector is expected to react favorably to this implicit endorsement of Locus Technologies.

Scaling and querying large NoSQL databases

Scaling and querying large NoSQL databases | Big Data | Scoop.it
The NoSQL revolution has happened so fast, few have a handle on the key architectural issues.
VendorFit's insight:

NoSQL turned the database world on its head, with databases that offered an unprecedented amount of flexibility in operations and scaling.  All of this new technology has created a dillema in many organiations that have system administrators still trained on the legacy RDBM systems.

We strongly recommend the implementation of NoSQL databases for two primary reasons.  Firstly, nodes can be added on the fly, creating distributed systems that are less prone to failure than the single large systems that RDMB requires.  Additionally, the autosharding scaling process is much more reliable and it creates more consistent data packages that are easier to track and manipulate.
