‘Retina-shocking’ flashing bike lights cause more problems than they prevent, article argues

‘Retina-shocking’ flashing bike lights cause more problems than they prevent, article argues | Bicycle Works | Scoop.it
With the days getting steadily darker, it’s not just visibility that’s a concern for some cyclists. To many, the best means of seeing and staying seen — namely, lights — can be a problem, too.
Stephen Crewson's insight:

This is definitely an interesting topic. I strongly disagree with the findings in this research.  Personally speaking, the pulsating light especially when commuting gets the attention of the distracted driver.

“Using flashing bike lights at night doesn’t make you safer, can create medical problems for people, can be dangerous for other bicyclists and is definitely obnoxious to be around. So really, why on earth would you do it?”

Set up a charging station wherever you park your bike—in your garage, in your apartment—with all the cords you need attached to one power strip. When you get in from a ride, immediately plug everything in so they’re all powered up for your next adventure."

Get your bike — and yourself — ready for winter with a blend of prevention, maintenance and good gear

Get your bike — and yourself — ready for winter with a blend of prevention, maintenance and good gear | Bicycle Works | Scoop.it
Photo Credit: blachswan via Compfight cc
There’s no denying that there’s a real joy inherent in winter cycling.
Stephen Crewson's insight:

"Regularly cleaning any accumulated muck is the simplest way to keep your bike in top working order, of course, but throughout the winter, it can also be the most laborious. This isn’t spring we’re talking about, after all. It’s not even autumn. During the winter months, slushy, salted roads can mean the accumulation of grit and residue in your parts, which can translate into rust later on — along with all the maintenance headaches rust can bring."

Review: Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper FSR 650b - Gear Patrol

Review: Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper FSR 650b - Gear Patrol | Bicycle Works | Scoop.it
We spent a month putting Specialized's new S-Works Stumpjumper FSR 650b through its paces and think that it could be the best Stumpy yet.
Stephen Crewson's insight:

"The Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper FSR 650b exemplifies 35 years of innovation and fine-tuning to one of the most classic mountain bikes. It is Specialized’s best Stumpy to date, a far cry from TiG welded aluminum frames, cantilever brakes, three-inch travel suspension forks and 3×9 drivetrains. The Stumpy will likely always be a flagship bike for Specialized."

September’s “day without cars” in Paris, France demonstrates what happens when bikes are put first

September’s “day without cars” in Paris, France demonstrates what happens when bikes are put first | Bicycle Works | Scoop.it
With much of Paris closed to all but bike and pedestrian traffic, the city’s car-free day last week caused one-third less pollution to be measured at the Champs Elysees.
Stephen Crewson's insight:

Car free experiment in Paris, France "caused a dramatic drop in air pollution."  Considering that Toronto has the second longest commuting times in North America, I wonder what kind of result we would see if this were done several times a year.
