Gadgets to Boost Bike Safety

Gadgets to Boost Bike Safety | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
An air-bag scarf that turns into a helmet on impact, a bike horn that mimics a car horn and other marvels of modern cycling.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

I like this list of gadgets that can boost bike safety that was featured in the NY Times wellness section.  Horns and lights are useful in reducing what I think is the number one cause of bike accidents which is the lack of conspicuousness by motorists of cyclists.  To this list I would also add safety gear for the rider including helmets with increased impact technology as well as bike front and rear view cameras to document "close calls" with motorists.  Mirrors are also useful in detecting who is coming up on your right or  left.

Is California a "bicycle-friendly" state?

Steven M. Sweat's insight:

California ranks 9th in the U.S. for being "bicycle-friendly" according to various criteria set out in this analysis by the League of American Bicyclists.  As an attorney that represents bicycle accident victims in Los Angeles, I can tell you that the City of Angels could certainly do more to improve this rating by improving upon infrastructure and education related to bicycle safety.  There are still far to many bike mishaps in "la la land", in my opinion.

Could a "rolling stop" be Safer for Cyclists?

Could a "rolling stop" be Safer for Cyclists? | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
The fact that the law requires cyclists to come to a full stop at stop signs forces thousands of two-wheelers every day to either break the law (by treating stops like yields) or expose themselves to risk on our busy city streets by dramatically slowing down. Yet the very thing that will get bikers out of the way of cars and quickly along their ways — treating a stop sign like a yield — is against state law. In August, several hundred cyclists protested an SFPD crackdown on stop-sign rolling by obeying the letter of the law while riding home from work through the Wiggle — the path of an old creek bed that dodges some of San Francisco’s steeper hills, and connects upper Market with the lower Haight by way of Duboce, Steiner, Waller and Pierce streets. Normally the Wiggle is about a five-minute pass-through for cyclists riding from downtown to the city’s western neighborhoods. The protest stirred enough of a fuss that Supervisor John Avalos is advancing a San Francisco Right-of-Way Policy that puts pedestrians at the top of the yield chain and permits cyclists to “proceed without fully stopping at stop signs if the intersection is empty.” Bicycling in San Francisco has come a long way since the heyday of Critical Mass in the 1990s. [...] the sheer volume of cyclists has turned the monthly two-wheeled takeovers into an everyday fact of your commute. Automotive moving violations routinely get a wink and a nod — turn-signal enforcement, anyone? — creating a dangerous double standard that undermines pedestrian safety and perpetuates the scapegoating of the vast majority of conscientious bike riders in our city.

On a July afternoon in New Orleans last year, Philip Geeck was riding his bicycle in a marked bike lane on a busy street. Approaching an intersection, he came up alongside a tractor-trailer truck hauling a tank of chemicals. Cyclist's Battle to Stay Safe on His Daily Commute

Cyclist's Battle to Stay Safe on His Daily Commute | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
David Fox wanted drivers in Salem, Ore., to realize bikers have road rights, too.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

While this is a story from an urban cyclist in Portland, it could just as well be Los Angeles or anywhere else where bikes and cars compete for roadway.  In California, the law clearly states that a bicycle is a "vehicle" with all the same rights to use the roadway as a motor vehicle (See Cal. Vehicle Code Section 21200). Unfortunately, the general public is of the opinion that bikes should remain either in bike lanes (which there are far too few of in L.A.) or on the sidewalk (despite the fact that riding a bike on a sidewalk is illegal in many municipalities in and around Southern California).  It is important that all cyclists do their part to educate others on the right of bike riders to "Share the Road"!

Who's responsible for death of L.A. Cyclist?

Who's responsible for death of L.A. Cyclist? | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
A delivery truck driver ran over a 19-year-old bicyclist and then drove away, a prosecutor told jurors Monday, but the defendant's attorney said another driver was likely responsible for the death.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Unfortunately, this bicycle accident in the Los Angeles area involves an all too common scenario: bike delivery persons getting hit and the driver fleeing the scene.  California law requires that motorist stop and provide their information after being involved in any motor vehicle collision.  Despite this legal requirement, hit and runs remain high in L.A. County.

Will Half of the Los Angeles Population Ditch Their Cars for Bikes? Mayor thinks so. | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
Mayor Eric Garcetti released a long-range plan multibillion dollar plan, including bikesharing and solar panels, to get Los Angeles green.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Let's face it, people living in and around Los Angeles LOVE their cars.  Estimating that over half of them will start using alternative forms of transportation like bikes is probably a bit ambitious.  I am hopeful, though, that this will encourage bicycle use in and around L.A. and remind us all to stay safe and share the road bicycles to reduce the number of bike crashes involving injury or death.
