Is California a "bicycle-friendly" state?

Steven M. Sweat's insight:

California ranks 9th in the U.S. for being "bicycle-friendly" according to various criteria set out in this analysis by the League of American Bicyclists.  As an attorney that represents bicycle accident victims in Los Angeles, I can tell you that the City of Angels could certainly do more to improve this rating by improving upon infrastructure and education related to bicycle safety.  There are still far to many bike mishaps in "la la land", in my opinion.

Feds move to reduce bicycle and pedestrian deaths

Feds move to reduce bicycle and pedestrian deaths | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
The federal government is launching an initiative to reduce the number of bicyclists and pedestrians who are killed in traffic accidents, the Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

While car crash fatalities, on the whole, are stable or going down in most states, there is a disturbing trend of an increase in fatalities in bicycle and pedestrian accidents since 2009.  This is prompting the U.S. Department of Transportation to take further measures to study the problem and find solutions.

Reserve Officer on Leave After Video Where She Says She Hates All Bicyclists and Wishes They Were Dead | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
A Santa Paula police volunteer officer has been placed on administrative leave after a video posted to her YouTube page of her talking about hating bicyclists was widely criticized on the Department’s...
Steven M. Sweat's insight:
Unfortunately, motorist negativity (and even downright hatred) towards cyclists is not uncommon in California and throughout the country. You don't expect this from law enforcement officials, though. As an attorney and advocate for bicyclists in Southern California, I can't say I'm surprised. I constantly see police officials placing blame for traffic collisions between motor vehicles and bikes without any legal justification and consistently ignoring the rule of law in CA which allows bikes to share the road with motorists. This is despicable conduct on the part of a person sworn to uphold this law and to protect all citizens of a SoCal city including those who choose to get out and ride their bicycle in compliance with the law!

Cycling Doesn't Cause Male Infertility: Study - eMedicineHealth | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
Cycling doesn't lead to male infertility and erectile dysfunction, but it may raise prostate cancer risk in cyclists over 50, a new study finds.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Nice to know that, at least by some recent medical research, male infertility and erectile dysfunction are not caused by cycling.  Nevertheless, male cyclists should take heed at a higher risk of prostate cancer (in older males).

Stop Hit-and-Runs in California Now!

Stop Hit-and-Runs in California Now! | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
In the City of Los Angeles, Angelenos have a greater than 1 in 1,000 chance of being injured or killed in a hit-and-run every year.

Los Angeles is at the center of a larger statewide problem that needs to be addressed throughout California.

Sign this petition to show your support for stopping hit-and-runs in California!
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Hit and runs have become a problem of epidemic proportions throughout California but, especially in our major urban areas like Los Angeles.  As an attorney who represents hit and run victims in L.A., I have seen first hand the type of devastation this type of traffic collision can cause and how difficult it is to bring the perpetrator to justice.  This petition supporting additional legislation that will help track hit and run accidents and speed up the investigation of these incidents is something I fully support. If you do as well, please sign to let our CA legislators know.

Steven M. Sweat's insight:

This is a great checklist and resource on safe cycling.  It provides everything from equipment check reminders to safe cycling practices in and around traffic.  As a bicycle accident attorney with experience in representing cycling accident victims, I think that more bikers should go through these types of protocols prior to jumping on and riding.  It can reduce the number of injury and fatal accidents.

Great information here from the League of American Bicyclists.  Tracking data on fatal and injury causing bike accidents throughout the country and publishing the facts surrounding these tragic crashes is a great way to spread awareness about bicycle safety.  It is crucial that we understand the breadth of the problem of motor vehicle collisions with bicycles.  The numbers are staggering and continue to increase in many parts of the U.S. including parts of California.  EVERY BICYCLIST COUNTS!!

Bicycling Can Be Deadlier in L.A. Than in Mumbai, Shanghai and Other Heavy-Traffic Cities (VIDEO) | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
At first, riding a bicycle through Mumbai seemed like a death wish. I saw lines of cars, scooters, rickshaws, horses, oxen, and even human-pulled carts lurch into intersections before the light turned green. I hesitated at the crosswalk, holding up traffic and setting off honking from behind. I was petrified...
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Los Angeles, on the surface, seems like the perfect place to get out and ride a bike.  The weather is temperate and the streets seem to be wide enough in most places and more bicycle lanes and other bike-friendly features are popping up.  This study by LA Weekly shows, though, that L.A. can be deadly for cyclists.  The death count for the year so far stands at 39!

Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Examining statistics on bicycle accidents can help us all learn the major causes of such mishaps and educate ourselves and our families and communities on ways to prevent such incidents.  This stat sheet from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shows that children and adolescents are much more likely to be involved in a bike crash and parents should keep this in mind when talking to kids and demanding that they wear safety gear like bike helmets.

What Happened to Head Injuries in Bike-Share Cities? - Boston Magazine | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
Overall, head injuries went down in cities like Boston that implemented bike-share programs, but a new study created confusing headlines.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Both good news and bad on the studies conducted related to head injuries in cities that have implemented bike-sharing programs.  While head injuries as a proportion of bodily harm for bikers went up, the total number of bicycle related injuries actually declined.  As an attorney that has represented bicycle accident victims with severe head injuries, I still feel that bike-sharing programs ought to provide helmets for their riders or mandate that riders using a bike-share cycle use a helmet.
