Bicycling Can Be Deadlier in L.A. Than in Mumbai, Shanghai and Other Heavy-Traffic Cities (VIDEO)

Bicycling Can Be Deadlier in L.A. Than in Mumbai, Shanghai and Other Heavy-Traffic Cities (VIDEO) | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
At first, riding a bicycle through Mumbai seemed like a death wish. I saw lines of cars, scooters, rickshaws, horses, oxen, and even human-pulled carts lurch into intersections before the light turned green. I hesitated at the crosswalk, holding up traffic and setting off honking from behind. I was petrified...
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Los Angeles, on the surface, seems like the perfect place to get out and ride a bike.  The weather is temperate and the streets seem to be wide enough in most places and more bicycle lanes and other bike-friendly features are popping up.  This study by LA Weekly shows, though, that L.A. can be deadly for cyclists.  The death count for the year so far stands at 39!

Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Great to see the "Every lane is a bike lane" campaign going in full force here in Los Angeles.  As an L.A. bike lawyer, I find that one of the main causes of bicycle accidents is a failure to share the road between bike riders and motor vehicle operators.

Driver pleads guilty for killing doctor riding bike near beach

Driver pleads guilty for killing doctor riding bike near beach | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
A motorist pleaded guilty Friday to accidentally hitting and killing a Newport Beach doctor as she bicycled with her husband along Newport Coast, court records show.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Our California coastal communities are where people like to bike more frequently than just about any other.  Unfortunately, this leads to increased interaction between motor vehicles and bike riders.  This story is a tragic case of what I, as a California bike accident lawyer, see all too frequently, which is a scenario where a motor vehicle strikes a bicycle rider and then flees the scene.  Inevitably, these incidents are witnessed and the witnesses come forward to provide license plate information which leads to criminal convictions and civil actions for recovery of money damages against the motor vehicle operator.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to this particular victim's family.

Helmet-cam captures bike accidents (and could make cycling safer)

Steven M. Sweat's insight:

This is a very interesting study that was done in Australia using bicycle head cams to record accidents and near mishaps between bikes and cars.  The various tapes revealed that the behavior of motorists may be much more of a factor in auto v. bike collisions than the safety habits of the bikers.  The main factor seemed to be the motor vehicle operator just not seeing the bike rider and making unsafe moves in their path of travel.  As a Los Angeles bike accident attorney, I have seen these same patterns play out many times with my clients and end up resulting in serious injuries and even death.

How to be prepared the next time you get caught in the dark
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Great tips from Bicycling Magazine on staying safe on night time bike rides.   It is very important to note that bicycle accidents at night occur more frequently simply due to the lack of visibility of the cyclist by motorists.  California Vehicle Code 21201(d) states as follows:

Smart Bicycle Safety: Get your bike in shape, get the proper gear, and know the rules of the road to keep you and your family safe! | Bicycle Safety and Accident Claims in CA | Scoop.it
Bicycle safety is truly important and there are many ways to make sure your bike (and your family member's bikes) are more safe than ever this year!
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Great tips on getting your bike and your family's bicycles in safe working order coming into the spring and summer (prime two-wheeled riding time especially in warm climates like Southern California).  Article suggests to first start with a thorough inspection and maintenance of the tires, handlebars, brakes, lights and other equipment. Next, make sure the family has proper fitting protective gear including helmets and knee and/or elbow pads for sport biking (like BMX).  Finally, know the rules of the road and teach these to your children.  All of this will go a long way to preventing bicycle accidents and/or minimizing any injury sustained in such an incident.
