Given the 12 months weve just emerged from, a time of political, economic and social upheaval, and a high celebrity death count, the idea of a happy new year is perhaps based more on optimism than recent experience. Having said that, theres one area where I know 2017 will be exciting: in literature. Indeed, in a local sense one of the most challenging, and thrilling, jobs of the year will be that of a book prize judge, particularly in fiction.
