Prophets: three principles to unlock the code

Prophets: three principles to unlock the code | Bible Prophecy | Scoop.it
Prophets and prophecy: the most misunderstood part of OT, “mysterious messengers”. A random chunk from a prophetic book will offer a confusing, seemingly muddled, confusion of vivid picture language.
Martin Pierce's insight:

Some keys to understanding the prophets.

Rebuttal to Dispensational Premillennialism | Christian Journal .org

most would be surprised to discover that the great figures of the Christian faith, such as Athanasius, Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, wrote absolutely nothing on the “rapture” nor the “seven year tribulation.”...
Martin Pierce's insight:

Almost all of this precisely conveys my thoughts on these topics.

It's often said that Christians will never be able to agree on what the Bible says. This is utterly false. If you get away from false teachings and study the Bible with an openness to God, and to both the literal and metaphoric meanings, you'll find that the Bible presents a single, consistent message throughout.

I know Christians can agree on the Bible's teachings. That's why I'm a believer in, and a promoter of Christian unity.

Why do I hold to the eschatological view that I do? Let's talk about it on Deeper Waters. I normally don't write about secondary issues, but eschatology is one subject in this category I do enjoy a...
Martin Pierce's insight:

I don't think I disagree with anything here except for this: I think eschatology is of primary, not secondary importance.

The Rapture Fallacy | Bible Prophecy | Scoop.it
If you have been following my posts here at the blog, you know that last month I began addressing “rapture” theology that has permeated American evangelicalism over the last century. I’m confrontin...
Martin Pierce's insight:

"[Rapture theology] has obstructed the gospel of the Kingdom that Christ proclaimed. In fact, it distorts the unique Christian hope, thereby influencing the way in which we evangelicals think and live in the world today."

I agree!

Martin Pierce's insight:

This is one of my posts. Please take this opportunity to visit my blog if you haven't done so before.

I didn't write much here. The great thing about this post is that I quoted dozens of Bible verses related to godly dominion and the kingdom of God. In theory, this should leave the anti-dominion and future kingdom Christians speechless. If only, right?

Martin Pierce's insight:

I don't know if I agree with all of this, but there are a lot of sound arguments here. It's definitely worth a read.

If you learn nothing else from this, learn that much of the Bible was written in the language of symbols and metaphors. It's absurd for anyone to try to take these passages (mentioned in this article) literally.

The judgment of the sheep and the goats | P.OST

The judgment of the sheep and the goats | P.OST | Bible Prophecy | Scoop.it
Martin Pierce's insight:

This article puts the "sheep and goats" parable in a historical (eschatological prophecy fulfilled) context, explaining that it apparently was a works-based judgment. The idea is that God dealt with various nations based on how they had treated the apostles and other Christians during the 1st century (~30-70 AD).

Dominion in Genesis, Part 4/8: Three Perspectives on End Times Prophecy - Premodern Wisdom for Postmodern Times | Bible Prophecy | Scoop.it
There are three main positions on the end times: premillennialism, amillennialism, and postmillennialism. Two are pessimistic, and only one is optimistic.
Martin Pierce's insight:

This is my own writeup on the three main interpretations of end times prophecy. This article puts you in the middle of my blog posts on Dominion in Genesis. I recommend that you read all 8 of the posts in this series for a better understanding both of Genesis and of the time we're living in.

Chapter Four Postmillennialism (18): The Reformed (Amillennial) Critique of Postmillennialism | Standard Bearer | Bible Prophecy | Scoop.it
Previous article in this series: March 15, 2012, p.
Martin Pierce's insight:

This article contains a thorough description of the kingdom of God, explaining that it is spiritual, yet present on this earth.

I always have to say "this earth" because some Christians are expecting God to create another earth in the future. If you had to make the same thing twice, wouldn't it mean you failed the first time?

The rapture riddle | Faith Meets World

The rapture riddle | Faith Meets World | Bible Prophecy | Scoop.it
Martin Pierce's insight:

This is a great read. especially for Christians who believe in, or are on the fence about "Left Behind" theology. I would echo this sentiment, quoted from this article:

"If you’ve unquestioningly believed in the rapture for years, as I did, then I hope this post has at least given you some food for thought. Letting go of long-held convictions is rarely easy or comfortable, but I believe God wants us to use our brains and to think critically about what we believe, why we believe it and what implications this has for our understanding of Kingdom living."

Be Careful of Platitudes on Biblical Prophecy | ALAN KURSCHNER | Bible Prophecy | Scoop.it
Martin Pierce's insight:

This article gives no anwers, but only points out that the common platitudes are wrong, unhelpful, and even divisive. Eschatology is important, and Christians CAN eventually reach a broad agreement on what the Bible teaches. However, this will never happen if most Christians continue to adopt a cavalier and dismissive attitude towards Bible prophecy.

Jesus spent Matthew 24 prophesying, in addition to other prophecies and prophetic parables.

Martin Pierce's insight:

People say all kinds of things about various prophecies in the Bible, but one of the most important prophecies to understand is Jesus' sermon in Matthew 24. Jesus clearly explained exactly what He was talking about, and it happened as He had predicted. Yes, I said "happened," as in past tense. Relax, because this wasn't a prophecy about a future tribulation.

Anyway, you can read all about what happened in this article.

Is God going to incinerate the Earth? And does it matter? - On Faith & Culture | Bible Prophecy | Scoop.it
Some evangelicals--but not all--believe the Earth will end in a cosmic barbecue. What difference does it make?
Martin Pierce's insight:

What Peter wrote about the new heavens and new earth is widely misunderstood by evangelicals. God is creating a new earth in terms of the kind or quality, not in materialistic terms.

Covenant Theology: A Defense of Postmillennialism

Martin Pierce's insight:

Here's a quote from this article:

" It was this expectation of victory that sparked the Revivals in England and Scotland, drove missionaries like William Carey on 15,000 mile voyages to India and other remote regions of the planet, and was the foundation of the London and Scottish Missionary Societies."

Dispensationalists also go to the ends of the earth, but only to preach a pessimistic and defeatist gospel.
