Dominion in Genesis, Part 1/8: Can We Honor God While Dishonoring His Prophets? - Premodern Wisdom for Postmodern Times

Dominion in Genesis, Part 1/8: Can We Honor God While Dishonoring His Prophets? - Premodern Wisdom for Postmodern Times | Bible-Genesis | Scoop.it
This is the first of eight posts on dominion in Genesis. God inspired His prophets to record stories so that we can learn from the lives of Bible characters.
Martin Pierce's insight:

This series of posts will educate you about a hidden theme in Genesis - the theme of dominion. Be among the first to learn about the symbolic connections between Adam, Joseph, and Jesus.

Why did Jesus warn about divorce?—Mark 10:1-12

Why did Jesus warn about divorce?—Mark 10:1-12 | Bible-Genesis | Scoop.it
Jesus’s followers knew that he condemned divorce; his warning appears in Paul, in Mark, and in another form shared by Matthew and Luke. Disagreement involves the extent to which and the circumstanc...
Martin Pierce's insight:

This gives me a new insight into Genesis 2. A husband and wife become one flesh, which forms a new blood tie. This is a closer blood relationship than the original family ties between the husband and his parental family, and the wife and hers. This explains why they both leave father and mother to form a new family unit.

Technically speaking, the husband and wife's genes aren't the same, but any children will have the genes from both, which proves the connection. Even if they have no children, however, there is a blood connection in God's sight because they are one flesh if they have consummated the marriage.

All of this supports the idea that divorce is wrong. People weren't to break blood ties in ancient times, and neither should we do so in the our time.

Mars' Hill Online – Words of Creation: A Discussion

Mars' Hill Online – Words of Creation: A Discussion | Bible-Genesis | Scoop.it
Martin Pierce's insight:

This statement from this article is absolutely untrue:

"Theistic evolutionists propose the six-day creation narrative in Genesis 1-3 is a poem or myth, yet the opening verses lack any form or phrase prominent in biblical Hebrew poetry: chiasm, acrostic, parallels, alliterations, or puns."

I've found extensive poetry in Genesis 1-3, and I'm not alone in this. If interested, you can consult James Jordan's works or my book, Return to Genesis.

I'm uncertain how they define "theistic evolutionist," or whether that describes me. I believe God created the Universe, and that He specially created Adam and Eve.

The Temple Symbolism in Genesis
Martin Pierce's insight:

I find it hard to accept the interpretation given here of Genesis 4:6-7. Even if you feel the same way, don't let that stop you from reading through this. I think it's mostly good and informative.

Why don't more Bible scholars trace the tabernacle and temple symbolism back to the Garden of Eden? To put it in simple terms, it's because they don't care one whit about Bible symbolism!

Two Different Creation Stories in Genesis?

Two Different Creation Stories in Genesis? | Bible-Genesis | Scoop.it
Contradictions in the Bible? Some say Genesis 1 and 2 are two different and contradictory creation stories. See what a careful reading of the text reveals.
Martin Pierce's insight:

I get tired of hearing as "indisputable fact" that Genesis 1 & 2 are contradictory.

I refuted this notion in Chapter 16 of Return to Genesis. Genesis 1 & 2 are two parts of the same poem.

This article also goes a long way toward refuting it.

How much do you know about Genesis, the first book of the Bible? (Genesis overview)
Martin Pierce's insight:

I recognize the importance of Genesis, which is why I chose to write a book titled, Return to Genesis. Please take note of this true statement:

"Genesis is not only the first book in the Bible, but it is also the most foundational.  Every major doctrine begins in Genesis.  It is quoted from over 200 times by Jesus and the New Testament writers."

How well do you understand the Book of Genesis?

Scientists Try to Reconcile Adam and Eve Story, Whiff. Again

Scientists Try to Reconcile Adam and Eve Story, Whiff. Again | Bible-Genesis | Scoop.it
Source: New Republic. Busily engaged in apologetics, BioLogos, an organization dedicated to getting evangelical Christians to accept evolution, has a new post on the never-ending kerfuffle about the meaning of Adam and Eve.
Martin Pierce's insight:

The reason why science can't explain how Adam and Eve could have existed is because the Bible has been misinterpreted. As I explained in my book, Return to Genesis, the Book of Genesis assumes that there were other people living at the time of Adam and Eve. The unique claim made for Adam and Eve is that God created them in His image.

Martin Pierce's insight:

The survey mentioned in this article confirms suspicions you may have had that a great many young people have been leaving churches because of the conflict between scientists and young earth creationists. Very sad. Too many older Christians see this as only an intellectual or theological debate, but these are real people, er, victims actually. Who cares? Well, I DO, for one.

I took the time to examine the evidence on both sides. Of course, any liar can make the same claim. Unlike them, I can prove it because six chapters of my book, Return to Genesis, deal specifically with the topics of Genesis 1, the creation, and the flood.

The Church can't afford to keep losing young and educated people because we promulgate pseudoscience.

Martin Pierce's insight:

Dr. Craig deals only with what the Bible says, not with what science says, yet his position is compatible with science. He responds to interpretations such as young earth creationism, the gap theory, and concordism (Hugh Ross' theories).

Dr. Craig's' views are biblical, and are close to what I believe. This is a long video series, but I think you will be rewarded even if you only listen to the first few videos. No need to "watch" them, really, just listen.

Texas Textbooks: A Case Study for Creationism's Staying Power

Texas Textbooks: A Case Study for Creationism's Staying Power | Bible-Genesis | Scoop.it
The Texas textbook wars have finally yielded a win for the Enlightenment.
Martin Pierce's insight:

Molly Worthen on creationism. Here's an important paragraph:

"Those early modern Protestants borrowed this “scientistic model” as a style of argument, then based their reasoning on a religious assumption: the principle that God is perfect and unchanging. It followed, logically, that God’s revelation must be perfect and unchanging too—not just in matters pertaining to salvation, but in every scientific and historical fact, from the scope of the Flood to the details of ancient Israel’s politics. And because a perfect God never contradicts himself, the revelation of the natural world (his creation) must always align with the revelation of the Bible."

The question is, how much did God care about the scientific accuracy of the Bible versus the deeper theological purposes. In particular, with regard to the opening chapter of the Bible, was God concerned about science or about theological instruction?

Christians Must Confront Scientific Illiteracy

Christians Must Confront Scientific Illiteracy | Bible-Genesis | Scoop.it
Christians have not always been such enemies of science. Aside from the occasional embarrassment, science often thrived in explicitly Christian settings. This is the heritage that Christians must reclaim and reassert.
Martin Pierce's insight:

This comes from the mostly secular Huffingtom Post, but this statement is spot on:

"For the greatest danger Christianity confronts at the present moment is not incipient persecution, but increasing marginalization and irrelevance. If Christians cannot engage reasonably and responsibly with science, there will be no place for them in the public life of advanced societies."

Some of you are probably thinking you're not going to compromise on the topic of the six-day creation. I used to be a hard-core fundamentalist myself. However, when I researched Genesis 1-11 in depth, I didn't find either 24-hour creation days or a global flood. With my background, I knew all the arguments. I responded to each of them in my book, Return to Genesis (available at https://www.createspace.com/3868591 ).

I haven't compromised on any core Christian doctrine, including creation and the fall. I still believe that Adam and Eve were real, and that God created them as described in Genesis 2.
