The League of Extraordinary Librarians: media specialists are leading the way as tech superheroes

The League of Extraordinary Librarians: media specialists are leading the way as tech superheroes | Bib. Escolar | Scoop.it

Meet the latest tech superheroes: school librarians. According to School Library Journal’s 2012 School Technology Survey, media specialists are leading the charge to bring new media, mobile devices, social apps, and web-based technologies into our nation’s classrooms.

So far, the results have been pretty impressive: 87 percent of school librarians report that they’re in charge of their library’s technology, with 60 percent adding that they’ve also introduced it into the classroom. Furthermore, 44 percent now serve on their school’s tech team, and in these budget-troubled times, when many library positions are on the line, that role may mean increased job security. In fact, 55 percent of the elementary, middle, and high school librarians that responded to our survey say that their tech skills have increased their value in administrators’ eyes.

Problem Based Learning, Part One: Learning to Create Questions and Find Answers Using QAR & Wikis

Problem Based Learning, Part One: Learning to Create Questions and Find Answers Using QAR & Wikis | Bib. Escolar | Scoop.it

How do we help our students learn this necessary skill they will use for the rest of their literate lives?

And, how do we prepare students to ask and answer thought-provoking questions if we want to implement Problem Based Learning in our classrooms?

PBL depends on a student's ability to generate driving questions, research, make sense of various text structures, make inferences, raise more and more questions, and create original content in response to their driving questions.

Challenge Based Learning

CBL is an engaging multidisciplinary approach to teaching and learning that encourages learners to leverage the technology they use in their daily lives to solve real-world problems. Challenge Based Learning is collaborative and hands-on, asking students to work with peers, teachers, and experts in their communities and around the world to ask good questions, develop deep subject area knowledge, identify and solve challenges, take action, and share their experience.

Resources, community, toolkits and more. CBL will definitely be the flavour for 2013.

10 Changes to Expect from the Library of the Future | Online Universities

10 Changes to Expect from the Library of the Future | Online Universities | Bib. Escolar | Scoop.it

Libraries have acted as community cornerstones for millennia, and every April marks School Library Month, celebrating how they promote education and awareness in an open, nurturing space. What makes them such lasting institutions, though, isn’t the mere act of preserving books and promoting knowledge. Rather, it’s the almost uncanny ability to consistently adapt to the changing demands of the local populace and emerging technology alike.

How To Make Students Better Online Researchers

How To Make Students Better Online Researchers | Bib. Escolar | Scoop.it

Getting kids to really focus on what exactly they are searching for, and then be able to further distill idea into a few key specific search terms is a skill that we must teach students, and we have to do it over and over again. We never question the vital importance of teaching literacy, but we have to be mindful that there are many kinds of “literacies”. An ever more important one that ALL teachers need to be aware of is digital literacy.
