There’s a simple way to connect with a challenging student, according to “The Two-Minute Relationship Builder” from the July issue of Education Update. Spend two minutes a day for 10 days having a personal conversation with the student.
The idea that different students may learn differently (otherwise known as ‘learning styles) is a pretty hot-button issue. In fact, I don’t think any other topic has garnered us such a large amount of hate-mail, even though we’ve tried to approach the topic from both sides of the argument.
That said, regardless of how you feel about whether different learning styles exist or not, there are many things that teachers have tried out over the years to see what works best for them and for their students.
Districts across the United States are implementing the Common Core State Standards, and they are realigning curriculum for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Unfortunately, some of them are simply purchasing a shiny, new “Common Core Edition” of their existing textbook, most of which aren’t any more aligned to these standards than their pre-CCSS versions.
Whatever you may think of the Common Core and its implementation, there is some powerful and valuable stuff embedded within the standards. In particular, the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP) contain important guidance about how students should think and work in a math classroom.
Edutopia blogger Mark Phillips suggests that a critical piece of student learning is the physical environment of the classroom itself. He offers examples of and resources for turning impersonal spaces into student-friendly havens of learning.
