The British Geological Survey have given an estimate of the scale of the resource in the ground, in one part of the country, but finding out how much can be extracted, and what it’ll cost to get the gas out of there requires test drilling and time. - See more at: http://www.rtcc.org/2013/08/23/comment-fracking-fight-highlights-need-for-carbon-pricing-strategy/#sthash.RvTSzky6.dpuf

Anti-fracking activists are "blinkered totalitarians", Sir Bernard Ingham says - Telegraph | BGS Coverage | Scoop.it

Anti-fracking activists are "blinkered totalitarians" who expect people to live in "yurts, tepees and wigwams", Sir Bernard Ingham has said. The British Geological Survey said in June that could be enough shale gas deposits to supply Britian's gas for 25 years, significantly more than previous estimates have suggested.

For those interested in reading more she recommends these pages at The British Geological Survey, Trowelblazers, and Breaking Ground, which seek to change the way we think about the study of the past through geology, paleontology and archaeology and emphasise the key roles women have played throughout the history of these disciplines.

It's Always Difficult To Tell Whether Greenpeace Is Deliberately Misleading Or Simply Deluded - Forbes.com | BGS Coverage | Scoop.it
I find myself having a little argument with a part of the UK offshoot of Greenpeace. Their claim is that fracking for shale gas will lead to a price reduction of only some 2-4% over here in Europe.

Before we get into the details of who said what and where, let’s try just a little overview from someone not involved in this particular argument, Bjorn Lomborg:

In late June the British Geological Survey announced the world’s largest shale-gas field. The Bowland Shale, which lies beneath Lancashire and Yorkshire, contains 50% more gas than the combined reserves of two of the largest fields in the United States, the Barnett Shale and the Marcellus Shale.

Fracking Near $14 Million Homes Advocates for U.K. Shale: Energy - Washington Post Business Page

The British Geological Survey estimates a single area --the Bowland basin stretching from the east Midlands into England’s northwest -- may hold as much 1,300 trillion cubic feet of gas. Even if only 10 percent of the gas is extracted, a typical rate in the U.S., that’s enough to meet 47 years of U.K. demand.

Nice Curves: Hill Shape Reveals Secrets of Earth Beneath - LiveScience

Nice Curves: Hill Shape Reveals Secrets of Earth Beneath - LiveScience | BGS Coverage | Scoop.it

Subtle features in hill shapes along the San Andreas Fault are directly related to processes that forced them up and out of the earth. The findings also suggest hills may one day even have the chance to reveal details about distant alien worlds. The concept of linking the shape of hills to any tectonic activity reshaping the landscape has been around for at least a couple of decades, explained researcher Martin Hurst, a geomorphologist at the British Geological Survey.

As UK protests against fracking continue, new research concludes that fracking-related processes triggered over 100 small quakes in Ohio in a year. However, geologists at the British Geological Survey say that groundwater reservoirs usually lie thousands of metres above the rocks that are fracked in well-managed operations, making contamination unlikely.

Noisy protest drowns out the truth about fracking - Telegraph | BGS Coverage | Scoop.it

Until this year, few outside the energy industry had ever heard of Francis Egan. And for good reason. Egan had spent the previous three decades in a successful but relatively low-profile career in and around the oil and extraction industry. A British Geological Survey report looking at northern England, released at the end of June, said that just that one part of the UK could provide enough shale gas to meet the UK’s energy needs for more than 40 years.
