How quickly will states get to zero in funding for higher education?

Public colleges and universities are supposed to be affordable options for students seeking a degree, but years of state budget cuts have led to increased tuition that families are struggling to afford. If states continue down this path of disinvestment, some will soon contribute nothing to higher education and leave schools and parents to fend for themselves, according to a series of new reports.

“Is grit [about] getting the kids to do what I want them to do?” asked educator Becky Fisher at the EduCon conference hosted by Science Leadership Academy, a magnet public high school, in Philadelphia earlier this year.  A group of about 50 teachers gathered to discuss these issues, and several expressed concerns that the grit narrative ignores many of the structural barriers that make it difficult for some children from low-income homes — or those who have learning differences — to succeed in school. Many educators questioned whether the current definition of grit is more about compliance than about possessing personal determination, particularly amid pressures on academic achievement.

The possibilities for making social connections around books have increased with the advent of online social networking. This article explores engagement of keen adolescent book readers from the West Australian Study in Adolescent Book Reading in social networking in general, and social networking around books. Frequent book readers are found to have a lower frequency of engagement in social networking than infrequent readers, with some students resistant to social networking in general. Others used social networking to access book reviews, without active participation. The most active participants were members of reading and self-publishing sites of fiction and fan-fiction.

How Brass Instruments Work is a relatively new TED-Ed lesson. The video provides an overview of how sound is produced and changed through trumpets, trombones, and tubas. The lesson within the video is rather basic but it does do a nice job of clearly conveying how a musician makes music on a brass instrument.
