Education Technology and the Year of Wishful Thinking

Education Technology and the Year of Wishful Thinking | Beyond the Stacks | Scoop.it
Education technology has faced an inexhaustible supply of quackery for quite some time – those selling snake oil, magic pills, and enchanted talismans and promising disruption, efficiency, and higher test scores. The quackery in 2016 wasn’t new, in other words, but it was notable. It is certainly connected to the discrediting of “expertise,” whether that’s teachers-as-experts or researchers-as-experts. What do we believe about education? About learning? How do we know, and who knows “knowing” in a world where expertise is debunked?

New Orleans high school turbocharges restorative justice - The Hechinger Report | Beyond the Stacks | Scoop.it
Around the country, educators have increasingly adopted elements of restorative justice amid growing frustration over the number of class hours lost to out-of-school suspensions: According to The U.S. Department of Education’s most recent Civil Rights Data, 2.8 million, or 6 percent, of all K-12 students received at least one out-of-school suspension during the 2011-12 school year. For black boys, the percentage is 18 percent, stark evidence of racial disparities in school discipline.

What It's Like to Teach '1984' in 2016

What It's Like to Teach '1984' in 2016 | Beyond the Stacks | Scoop.it
Analytical, communication, and attention deficits are a problem of education but also a social environment that has steadily required less in the way of written and verbal communication, as well as an entertainment industry that has provided content—shorter, faster, brighter, simpler—to suit that shift. They need to see books as rich, perpetual gifts to those in need of solace and inspiration, and to know that their fears have been addressed before, in more dire circumstances, and that thinkers from the past can help them anticipate the new guises of the terrors they faced.
