A statewide school reform gains fans and concerns while letting students learn at their own pace - The Hechinger Report | Beyond the Stacks | Scoop.it
HINESBURG, Vt. — Troy Paradee loves going to school. He loves “the excitement about all the things I’m getting to learn.” Jocelyn Foran can’t wait to get to her classroom either: “We are learning so much more and it’s so much more fun and creative.”
Paradee and Foran are among the surprise beneficiaries of a statewide effort in Vermont to “personalize” learning: They are teachers who say that their jobs have become far more rewarding by giving students greater freedom to choose what to learn both in and out of school.

Spokane’s educators have latched onto an idea that at first might seem counterintuitive: They believe they can get more students to go to college and stay there by making high school harder.

You probably believe some of these learning myths: Take our quiz to find out | Beyond the Stacks | Scoop.it
This blog post has some pretty useful information. So print it out; get out your highlighter and take off the cap.

Ready? Now throw it away, because highlighters don't really help people learn.

We all want for our kids to have optimal learning experiences and, for ourselves, to stay competitive with lifelong learning. But how well do you think you understand what good learning looks like?

The Distracted Classroom

The Distracted Classroom | Beyond the Stacks | Scoop.it
The more powerful the goals we establish for ourselves, and the more we feel ownership over those goals, the more we are able to pursue them in the face of both internal and external distractions.

So if we want to deal with distractions in teaching, an obvious place to turn would be toward our goals for the classroom: Who creates them? How much do they matter? And how well do students understand them?

How Researchers Are Beginning to Gently Probe the Science Behind ASMR

How Researchers Are Beginning to Gently Probe the Science Behind ASMR | Beyond the Stacks | Scoop.it

"Once a mysterious Internet phenomenon, “tingleheads” are starting to get real scientific attention

Once ASMR had a name—and had been featured in a slew of can-you-believe-this news stories—academics became interested in pinning down what it was."
