I've always been leery of Charter Schools - esp. after touring several w/ the ISTE Board of Directors  - Mostly biased because they RARELY if EVER have School Libraries! Grrrrr!

Why Students Don't Read What is Assigned in Class - YouTube

This video taken in an English class interviews high school students who have rediscovered the habit of reading after being allowed to spend a semester reading books of their own choosing rather than "classics" that are assigned. It leaves unanswered the question of, in the context of such a policy, when or if students will learn how to read such challenging literature.  Clearly, though, the more traditional method of assigning books in the hopes that students would attempt is flawed.
