An effective school library impacts more than student achievement—it also lifts a school's entire educational climate, says a recent two-phase study by Rutgers University's Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries (CISSL) on behalf of the New Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL).

Yet another study finds a relationship between having a certified school librarian and higher scores in reading and writing assessments.  This one is from Pennsylvania, where high school students take a state assessment known as the PSSA:

“Students who have access to a full-time, certified librarian scored higher on the PSSA Reading Test than those students who do not have such access. This finding is true for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic, racial/ethnic, and/or disability status.”

Three-year study asserts benefits of school libraries on student learning | Beyond the Stacks | Scoop.it

The New Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL) released findings on Wednesday of a three-year study conducted by the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries (CISSL) at Rutgers University, which explored the values of quality school libraries to education in New Jersey.

“The findings show that New Jersey school libraries and school librarians contribute in rich and diverse ways to the intellectual life of a school, and to the development of students who can function in a complex and increasingly digital information environment,” said Dr. Ross Todd, lead researcher in the study and CISSL director.
