C’est une histoire exemplaire, narrée dans le 24 avril 2012 par Seth Stevenson dans le magazine Wired : Sam Fiorella, un talentueux responsable marketing passé par AOL, Ford et Kraft cherchait un nouveau poste, mais fut rejeté lors d’un entretien d’embauche, au motif qu’il était inexistant sur les réseaux sociaux, et plus particulièrement sur Twitter. Le niveau de son « Klout » avait été jugé rédhibitoire.

En d’autres termes, bien qu’excellent manager, ce haut potentiel était considéré comme défaillant sur le plan de l’influence sociale. Bref, ce n’était pas un leader d’opinion... En revanche, celui qui a été embauché avait, lui, un score éloquent. L’intérêt pour les recruteurs ? Ces scores sont publics. Il suffit d’être membre d’un réseau social : impossible de les cacher ou de tricher.

Mais alors, qu’est-ce qui permet de penser que ces scores mesurent bien ce qu’ils sont censés mesurer, à savoir l’influence sociale, et non pas la capacité à bavarder toute la journée sur Facebook ou Twitter ?
