Mexico: Zacatitos 004 Residence: Off the Grid

Mexico: Zacatitos 004 Residence: Off the Grid | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

Designed by Campos Leckie Studio, the Zacatitos 004 Residence is the fourth and smallest home of a series of structures successfully operating off-the-grid. Located in a tiny Mexican town, roughly 45 minutes up a dirt road from San José del Cabo, this project is part of the collective of four innovative seasonal retreats.

The house greets guests into a stucco hallway that leads to a courtyard, where the house’s environmental control strategies come into play. The courtyard is properly shaded from the intense sun rays and the two entrance walls catch and amplify the winds, drawing air across the pool to naturally air-condition the exterior deck and kitchen/dining area.

Different areas of the home are slightly separated, Campos and Leckie used the separations in the architecture to fill the gaps with light and wind. The presence and orientation of walls along with choices of material passively temper the environment..

Italy: Trento Tunnel Exhibition: A unique perspective on cinema and the first world war

Italy: Trento Tunnel Exhibition: A unique perspective on cinema and the first world war | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"This is a guest post for Silent London by Neil Brand, writer, composer, silent film accompanist and TV and radio presenter.

Deep beneath the mountains of the Trentino range of Italy and Austria’s Dolomites lies one of the most extraordinary exhibits, in one of the most extraordinary galleries, in the world. One walks into a gigantic road tunnel, through a curtain and into one of the most potent and gripping representations of WWI cinema anywhere on the planet. From the very first image (from the Imperial War Museum) as a real shell strikes a galloping troop of British field artillery, leaving dead horses and soldiers on the field as the smoke clears, we are in the binary world of WWI “reality” as seen by the cameras of the time and the imaginations of those who came after."

Spain: Clever interactive street art by Spanish artist Pejac | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"Spanish artist Pejac creates street art that are thought provoking and simplistic. He often uses silhouettes in his works which creates a lasting impact on the viewers mind. Pejac is conversant in all medium from canvas to wall murals.  His minimalistic style and ability to use the surrounding as part of his artwork is something that makes his works noticeable."

USA: Artist turns used paintbrushes into ladies from famous paintings

USA: Artist turns used paintbrushes into ladies from famous paintings | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"For San Francisco-based artist Rebecca Szeto, a paintbrush isn’t just her medium, it’s her canvas as well. Instead of just painting to create an artwork, she uses brushes as artworks themselves! By carving out the handles of used paintbrushes, she turns these unsuspecting materials into the ladies from famous paintings, complete with skirts and dresses made from bristles soaked in paint.

‘These works play with notions of re-forming beauty and value’, says Szeto. ‘I use humble, end-of-life, mass-produced materials inspired by my experience as a faux finisher. The paintbrush is self-referential, acting as both subject and object. It refers to the history of painting, through the medium of paint, with its own tool’."

Around The World -::- Stunning Land Art Reflections Complete Circles of Life | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

With his project collaborator Philippa Jones, photographer and artist Martin Hill travel to remote locations around the world to create environmental sculptures that represent a visual circle of life. What sets his land art apart from the rest, is that many of his works don't completely form until the water is calm and the sun hits them, creating a startling reflection in the water.

Australia: This is What Happens When You Give Thousands of Stickers to Thousands of Kids

Australia: This is What Happens When You Give Thousands of Stickers to Thousands of Kids | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"This December, (2011) in a surprisingly simple yet ridiculously amazing installation for the Queensland Gallery of Modern Ar, artist Yayoi Kusama constructed a large domestic environment, painting every wall, chair, table, piano, and household decoration a brilliant white, effectively serving as a giant white canvas. Over the course of two weeks, the museum’s smallest visitors were given thousands upon thousands of colored dot stickers and were invited to collaborate in the transformation of the space, turning the house into a vibrantly mottled explosion of color. How great is this?"

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Maybe it's time for others to replicate this idea? Around the globe?

Damien Hirst, eat your heart out.

Italy : Ghostly painted shadows in abandoned psychiatric hospital

Italy : Ghostly painted shadows in abandoned psychiatric hospital | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

Behold the eerie work of Brazilian street artist Herbert Baglione. These ghostly shadows painted in an abandoned psychiatric hospital in Parma, Italy are a part of an ongoing project titled “1000 Shadows.”

Baglione’s work isn’t just limited to abandoned psychiatric hospitals (although I truly dig this idea), his painted silhouettes have shown up all over the world in deserted buildings, foreclosed homes and empty offices. His ghostly shadows tell the stories of the souls who once inhabited the now abandoned spaces. Locations that once had life.

You can follow Baglione’s “1000 Shadows” project on his Facebook page.
