Hauntingly Beautiful Abandoned Europe: Meet Urbex Master Andre Govia

Hauntingly Beautiful Abandoned Europe: Meet Urbex Master Andre Govia | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"Urbex guru Andre Govia has an uncanny ability to take the most amazingly beautiful photos of creepy abandoned places. If you like abandoned, creepy, spooky, scary or haunted, then you could disappear for hours into Andre’s photostream. He’s a master of capturing hauntingly beautiful shots of abandoned mansions, hospitals, asylums, industrial complexes, hotels and about anything else you can imagine that might be abandoned across Europe. Andre Govia is on an urbex  European madness tour; the fear factor is off the charts and some of the photos could scare the snot out of you. He’s been urbexing all over the globe and in 22 different countries. He and his adrenaline junkie buddies have Fright Night down to a fine art, exploring places caught in a time-warp, locations where history is frozen in time, and capturing ghosts of the past. Interesting at any time, it’s downright spooky to view his artistic photos around Halloween. Be ready to take a trip through some of the creepy, haunted locations. Andre granted Love These Pics an interview and offers tips for urban explorers and secrets to get the killer shots. His photos offer something for everyone, from elegant and hauntingly beautiful, to a scare factor that is the stuff of nightmares. Meet Andre Govia. "

A manual typewriter coated with dust. What kind of story would it type?  Perhaps it would tell us who left his umbrella next to the clock on the old wooden desk under the stairs?

Follow Andre Govia's camera as it uncovers the stories in some of the most amazing abandoned places.  A poet of the eye.

Portugal : 36 HOURS IN LISBON

Portugal : 36 HOURS IN LISBON | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"

Lisbon sits on Portugal’s central western peninsula South of Porto and North of the Algarve and is made up of knots of winding, steep cobbled streets smothered in pattered tiles. The capital city is renowned for its seafood and custard tarts and with an exciting gastronomic scene is a must for all foodies. Be it a short city break or the start of a longer holiday in and around the country, Lisbon is one of the most beautiful and exciting spots in Portugal. Food is immensely good and immensely cheap. Fun art, design, clothes and interior shops are dotted en masse around the city, and nightlife is buzzing and varied from traditional old bars to modern rooftop drinking holes and warehouse conversion nightclubs on the waterfront.

France: R&Sie Architects Design a Living Green House Lost in Paris

France: R&Sie Architects Design a Living Green House Lost in Paris | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

What a fabulous idea! A living green house lost in London next please!

==========================================================

Can’t decide on a green roof or a vertical garden? No problem, just do both! R&Sie Architects designed the aptly-named ‘Lost in Paris‘ house for an ‘urban witch’ who feeds the house through 300 glass-blown pods. A potion of rainwater and plant nutrients nourishes 1200 ferns drop-by-drop throughout the year. The houseplants are entirely hydroponic, and completely engulfing the 1400 square foot concrete home. The blanket of ferns protects the house from outside elements and regulates its inside temperature, all the while adding life and freshness to the neighborhood.

Taking nearly five years to build, this home for 4 is always getting attention. Architect Francois Roche explains it as “a game of attraction and repulsion” where passersby may be inspired or frightened, and of course wary of the looming ‘urban witch.’ R&Sie Architects are no newcomers to breaking architectural norms. They’ve built and conceptualized a gigantic spider’s nest, an alchemist’s greenhouse for experimenting with toxic plants, and even an exhibit at MIT based on urinotherapy.

Nowadays almost every photographer use graphics software to complete the picture, like many painters used ‘original version’ in the past. Some artists use pure imagination to paint their artworks, others may prefer to create art by using a real life model as reference for the anatomy. What if these abstract models were real people?

French Pavilion Expo Milano 2015 by XTU Architects

French Pavilion Expo Milano 2015 by XTU Architects | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

The theme of the upcoming Expo Milano 2015 is "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life" and will cover the issues of nutrition, limited resources and water access to the world's exponentially growing population. Paris-based XTU Architects conceived of a fertile roof structure which represents the productive soils found in France for their national pavilion. Known for its rich genetic heritage and high quality gastronomy, France's geology can lead to a food revolution as a future resource.

The temporary construct for Milan's 6-month-long exposition will act as both a generator and market place for food. Along the edifice, plants, herbs and vegetables will grow, addressing the need for growing sites to support the Western cultures food demands as it spreads to a global stage. A consumption terrace will be found within the productive structure to enjoy the vegetables on site. Innovative hydroponics will supply the crops with water.

All aboard for the world's best sleeper train journeys in the UK, Europe and beyond

All aboard for the world's best sleeper train journeys in the UK, Europe and beyond | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it
Glamour, heartbreak and the occasional murder - train journeys have long been the source of romance and drama in popular culture. And while travelling by rail no longer necessitates the appearance of Poirot, it can still be a wonderfully fulfilling way of moving around. This sense of adventure is increased tenfold with sleeper trains, and the beguiling prospect of going to bed in one place and waking up in another.

Forget endless queues and bland plane food; this experience is all about evening night caps, cosy bunker cabins and soaking in the scenery. Even the names of sleeper trains are enough to conjure up excitement and intrigue, whether it's the Red Arrow or the Caledonian Sleeper.

From the modern efficiency of the City Night Line from Copenhagen to Prague to the opulence of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, we round up the best, most inspiring sleeper train routes to suit all tastes and budgets. All aboard for journey of a lifetime.

China: Massive Swan Pencil Illustration Hangs 7 Feet Wide

China: Massive Swan Pencil Illustration Hangs 7 Feet Wide | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"Beijing-based illustrator Alice Lin creates beautiful illustrations filled with rich, strikingly crisp details. One of her recent works, Faramita, features a giant swan with large fluttering wings spread wide. The artist used only pencil on Canson drawing paper to create the elaborate illustration, which hangs almost 7 feet wide by 3.5 feet tall and took approximately one month to complete.

Layer upon layer of pencil, Lin creates amazing details by paying close attention to light and shadows and creating an incredible depth to her illustrations. She uses reality as the basis for her work but then expands upon these ideas to create fascinating concepts filled with surreal elements. As viewers inspect the image of the swan, imaginative details reveal themselves in the form of tiny skulls swirling around the wings, while human forms emerge from the chaotic cluster of feathers."
