Hauntingly Beautiful Abandoned Europe: Meet Urbex Master Andre Govia

Hauntingly Beautiful Abandoned Europe: Meet Urbex Master Andre Govia | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"Urbex guru Andre Govia has an uncanny ability to take the most amazingly beautiful photos of creepy abandoned places. If you like abandoned, creepy, spooky, scary or haunted, then you could disappear for hours into Andre’s photostream. He’s a master of capturing hauntingly beautiful shots of abandoned mansions, hospitals, asylums, industrial complexes, hotels and about anything else you can imagine that might be abandoned across Europe. Andre Govia is on an urbex  European madness tour; the fear factor is off the charts and some of the photos could scare the snot out of you. He’s been urbexing all over the globe and in 22 different countries. He and his adrenaline junkie buddies have Fright Night down to a fine art, exploring places caught in a time-warp, locations where history is frozen in time, and capturing ghosts of the past. Interesting at any time, it’s downright spooky to view his artistic photos around Halloween. Be ready to take a trip through some of the creepy, haunted locations. Andre granted Love These Pics an interview and offers tips for urban explorers and secrets to get the killer shots. His photos offer something for everyone, from elegant and hauntingly beautiful, to a scare factor that is the stuff of nightmares. Meet Andre Govia. "

A manual typewriter coated with dust. What kind of story would it type?  Perhaps it would tell us who left his umbrella next to the clock on the old wooden desk under the stairs?

Follow Andre Govia's camera as it uncovers the stories in some of the most amazing abandoned places.  A poet of the eye.

Remarkably haunting.Andre Govia has traveled through Europe on a Urbexing tour (Urbexing The present participle verb form of urbex. Urbexing is the act of exploring urban areas that are generally off-limits to regular civilians.)The images in this collection are breathtaking and thought provoking to say the least.I enjoyed looking at all of them in detail. My favorites in this collection were the images that were not altered. Europe has so much history and these pictures bring this to light.Amazing architecture combined with the element of decay create a mysterious and emotional set of images.

In this modern age where everything that is "new" has more value it is nice to see the past being viewed for the beauty that it offers.

USA: Artist turns used paintbrushes into ladies from famous paintings

USA: Artist turns used paintbrushes into ladies from famous paintings | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"For San Francisco-based artist Rebecca Szeto, a paintbrush isn’t just her medium, it’s her canvas as well. Instead of just painting to create an artwork, she uses brushes as artworks themselves! By carving out the handles of used paintbrushes, she turns these unsuspecting materials into the ladies from famous paintings, complete with skirts and dresses made from bristles soaked in paint.

‘These works play with notions of re-forming beauty and value’, says Szeto. ‘I use humble, end-of-life, mass-produced materials inspired by my experience as a faux finisher. The paintbrush is self-referential, acting as both subject and object. It refers to the history of painting, through the medium of paint, with its own tool’."

Around The World -::- Stunning Land Art Reflections Complete Circles of Life | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

With his project collaborator Philippa Jones, photographer and artist Martin Hill travel to remote locations around the world to create environmental sculptures that represent a visual circle of life. What sets his land art apart from the rest, is that many of his works don't completely form until the water is calm and the sun hits them, creating a startling reflection in the water.

Hungary : Rudas Bath - Budapest Turkish Baths | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

What makes Rudas Bath stand out is definitely its 16th century core, and the fact that the bath has a special very late night opening hours every Friday and Saturday (the baths reopen from 10 pm to 4 am, both nights). Also, Rudas is the only thermal bath in Budapest, which has men only and women only days on weekdays, when aprons are worn by many guests instead of traditional swimwear.

Rudas Bath has recently been restored (in 2012), and is located at the foot of the scenic Gellert Hill on the Buda side.

Australia: This is What Happens When You Give Thousands of Stickers to Thousands of Kids

Australia: This is What Happens When You Give Thousands of Stickers to Thousands of Kids | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"This December, (2011) in a surprisingly simple yet ridiculously amazing installation for the Queensland Gallery of Modern Ar, artist Yayoi Kusama constructed a large domestic environment, painting every wall, chair, table, piano, and household decoration a brilliant white, effectively serving as a giant white canvas. Over the course of two weeks, the museum’s smallest visitors were given thousands upon thousands of colored dot stickers and were invited to collaborate in the transformation of the space, turning the house into a vibrantly mottled explosion of color. How great is this?"

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Maybe it's time for others to replicate this idea? Around the globe?

Damien Hirst, eat your heart out.

Italy : Ghostly painted shadows in abandoned psychiatric hospital

Italy : Ghostly painted shadows in abandoned psychiatric hospital | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

Behold the eerie work of Brazilian street artist Herbert Baglione. These ghostly shadows painted in an abandoned psychiatric hospital in Parma, Italy are a part of an ongoing project titled “1000 Shadows.”

Baglione’s work isn’t just limited to abandoned psychiatric hospitals (although I truly dig this idea), his painted silhouettes have shown up all over the world in deserted buildings, foreclosed homes and empty offices. His ghostly shadows tell the stories of the souls who once inhabited the now abandoned spaces. Locations that once had life.

You can follow Baglione’s “1000 Shadows” project on his Facebook page.

Twenty One Wines

21 Prince Albert St, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1HF
01273 776096

When abroad, it is always diverting to wind one’s way around exotic

passageways into piazzas and markets. Here in Brighton, close to The Lanes, I had just such an enchanting experience. A small wine shop attracted my attention and once inside, I found myself in a bounteously laden Aladdin’s cave of a shop. I had been drawn in by an enticing window display and then once inside, in a few electrifying, eclectic moments, I could make out a Glera made Prosecco and a Pinot Noir tantalisingly called Wooing Tree Blondie, then to a lush-looking Mr Smith’s Shiraz and then to an eye-catching, skull-shaped bottle for comedy legend Dan Aykroyd’s Crystal Head Vodka. Further back , a bottle of (very) best brandy priced at £159! There was also a fine display of English sparkling wines which included (not surprisingly) bubbles from the already legendary Ridgeway Fitzrovia, Sussex winery, but not (as far as I could see) the 2009 Blanc de Blanc as served at Windsor Castle earlier this year as part of the state visit of Irish president (and poet) Michael D. Higgins!

Maybe Twenty One Wines is not Berry Bros & Rudd nor indeed Hedonism Wines in Mayfair, but here’s logging a very smart new kid on the block!

Shaun Traynor

A word or two from Twenty One Wines

Twenty One Wines is a small, independent wine specialist. We stock a comprehensive list of interesting & quality wines from around the world, mainly from small independent producers.

Established in May 2012 by Tom & Philip, both of whom come from a winemaking & viticulture background. We hope to bring you some of the finest wines we can find, based on our years of experience pruning vines, making, tasting (and drinking) wine! We do not specialise in any particular genre, just as long as the wine in the bottle is honest and good!

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

We will wend our way again to this funky but friendly wine shop, when next in Brighton. Next week in fact, as part of my birthday celebrations. A perfect place to pick up some Prosecco, before heading to the beach to pop some corks and release some candlelit lanterns. And yes, we will be wrapping up warm, and no, no skinny dipping.

China: Massive Swan Pencil Illustration Hangs 7 Feet Wide

China: Massive Swan Pencil Illustration Hangs 7 Feet Wide | Beyond London Life | Scoop.it

"Beijing-based illustrator Alice Lin creates beautiful illustrations filled with rich, strikingly crisp details. One of her recent works, Faramita, features a giant swan with large fluttering wings spread wide. The artist used only pencil on Canson drawing paper to create the elaborate illustration, which hangs almost 7 feet wide by 3.5 feet tall and took approximately one month to complete.

Layer upon layer of pencil, Lin creates amazing details by paying close attention to light and shadows and creating an incredible depth to her illustrations. She uses reality as the basis for her work but then expands upon these ideas to create fascinating concepts filled with surreal elements. As viewers inspect the image of the swan, imaginative details reveal themselves in the form of tiny skulls swirling around the wings, while human forms emerge from the chaotic cluster of feathers."
