How To Win The Talent War

How To Win The Talent War | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
The formula for a successful startup is simple: create a product that people need, and hire ridiculously talented, highly motivated people to build it.

I once hired a developer who had more experience in his field than I did in mine. His resume touted roles at companies I one day hope to emulate, and his Rolodex read like a who’s who of tech startups. I was excited by the possibilities of having someone like this on our team, and I anticipated a long and rewarding career for him at our company.

No doubt he was talented--but the sad reality was that he had no genuine interest in building the company I envisioned. He stayed with us less than six months.

When hiring for roles like this at Betterment.com, the investing startup I founded two years ago, I soon learned the formula for a successful startup. It’s simple: create a product that people need, and hire ridiculously talented, highly motivated people to build it.

As I experienced then (and many times over), finding the ridiculously talented, highly motivated people is the more challenging side of this equation.

I don’t want to downplay the need for a great product--but a great product is rarely born on day one. Instead, it takes modifications, iterations, and adjustments based on user feedback. You need smart, thoughtful employees to imagine and implement these changes.

We break the pool of promising candidates into three buckets:...

The power of storytelling, the key to consumer engagement

The power of storytelling, the key to consumer engagement | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it

Brands that succeed draw the consumer with a compelling narrative: Gatorade's replay series was a first-class example...

The winning formula for consumer engagement is storytelling. It sounds simple, but we only need to look back through history to see the impact that stories have had on shaping our lives: how we live them, why we live them and what it means to be human.

Narratives as powerful as the Bible, to ancient myths and Shakespeare's prose, speak to the heart, teaching us how to relate to one another and guiding us into action. Let's not forget that stories are easier on the ear than detached advertising taglines.

Studies of human psychology have found that if we are told something through narrative, we are more likely to relate to the message, absorbing it further and remaining engaged from start to finish.

For a brand to appeal to consumers and replicate this empowering engagement, its content must tell a story, one that draws us in, broadens our horizons and delivers added value to our lives.

But how do brands do it?

10 Things You Must Give Up to Be Successful

10 Things You Must Give Up to Be Successful | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
Don’t spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door.”
-Coco Chanel

When we think about how to achieve success, we often focus on the skills and habits we should add to our lives.  But sometimes the key to success actually lies in our ability to give up certain habits and behaviors.  So starting today…

1. Give up the habit of waiting. – The way you spend your time defines who you are.  You don’t get to choose how you are going to die, or when; you can only decide how you are going to live right now.  Trust me, a year from now you will wish you had started today.  Read The Now Habit.

2. Give up the excuses. – Sooner or later you will come to realize that it’s not what you lose along the way that counts; it’s what you do with what you still have.  When you let go, forgive, and move on, you in no way change the past, you change the future.

3. Give up trying to be perfect. – Sometimes we try to show the world that we are flawless in hopes that we will be liked and accepted by everyone.  But we can’t please everyone, and we shouldn’t try.  The beauty of us lies in our vulnerability, our love, our complex emotions – our authentic imperfections.  When we embrace who we are and decide to be authentic, instead of perfect, we open ourselves up to real relationships, real happiness, and real success.  There is no need to put on a mask.  There is no need to pretend to be someone you’re not.  You are perfectly imperfect just the way you are.
