Great post and free e-book from leadership expert Karin Hurt from @LetsGrowLeaders.    I totally agree with Karen's views on Parenting and Leadership.  Here is just one example:


It’s interesting to see leaders who take their servant leadership philosophy seriously at work, but have a more hovering approach when it comes to their children. In an effort to protect and scaffold, they actually overlook natural opportunities for their children to emerge as leaders.


The best way to learn the piano is to practice.


The best way to learn to do a flip-turn is to get in the pool and get some water up your nose.


The best way to learn leadership is by leading.


Our children surprise us when we stop looking for perfection and see the leaders that they are becoming.

Building our sense of physical capability certainly builds our sense of self... as does building cognitive capability. Bigger trick is to not identity either... as who we are... but as capacities carried by a yet deeper identity.

Here is my favorite section of the post:


One rather abrasive executive actually told me:


“I don’t have time for this stuff.  This is a waste of time and money!”


Like so many abrasive executives, he chose to criticize and ridicule the need to improve his organizational culture instead of the facing the fact that his staff was confused, fearful, and suffering from an extreme lack of trust in management.  


I am fairly sure he had fallen into the bullying trap a number of times.

Once we understand this bullying trap, it starts to make sense that over 50 million employees have reported that they have been bullied or otherwise abused.

Over 50 Million have been bullied at work!!!

This frightening statistic was shared with me by Dr. Annette Rotter, an expert on the topic of bullying, during an interview last year.  

Dr. Rotter explained that:


“A major part of the problem is many managers AND employees are not equipped or prepared to lead through the growing pressure and tension of the workplace and, as a result, lash out at their employees.”


I sincerely doubt that thousands of managers get out of bed in the morning thinking that they can’t wait to go bully and intimidate their employees and co-workers. However, the sad truth is that too many of us fall into the bullying trap.  


As David Hain explained, healthy organizations support those who may be being bullied and those who fall into the trap of bullying.  Easy to say, very hard to do…

Totally agree with the following:


Vision is an essential element to making organizations work in meaningful ways but the work needs to be reinforced through the right cultural aspects.


The culture and vision blend:


  • Vision activates action but needs to be reinforced with the culture to incite the right behaviors.
  • Culture empowers people to create, solve, and grow all the while enabling the organization to achieve, build, and realize the vision of what is possible for customers and stakeholders.
  • Vision and culture need to be wrapped together in order to unbind the ability within each team member.

Great post to read when things get tough and we question whether or not to keep going.  


I love the image above because of its simple, yet powerful message and it goes perfectly with the tips from a Navy Seal to achieve goals that seem impossible very much like mine...


Here are two of tips that helped me the most today:


7. Be willing to fail.

When entering this phase of my life, I knew that statistically, the odds were not in my favor. I also knew that if I didn't try, I would never forgive myself. I decided that I would rather try and fail than be the guy who says, "I was thinking about trying that." You simply can't look at life through a lens of fear. If you take a calculated risk and fail, at the very least you have a valuable learning experience. Get back up. Dust off. And never, ever, be out of the fight.


And..

9. Don't back down.

My favorite passage from the Navy SEAL creed reads: "I will never quit. I persevere and thrive on adversity. My Nation expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down, I will get back up, every time. I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my teammates and to accomplish our mission. I am never out of the fight." Enough said.

One way to do this is to recommend people on LinkedIn—though that process does require a bit of thought and effort. Giving endorsements, on the other hand, is an easy, low-effort way of keeping in touch and regularly engaging with your contacts. Think of it as just sending little notes that say, “I remember you! You’re awesome!” Sounds simple, but it never hurts to generate some goodwill before you need it.

LinkedIn automatically defaults to ranking your skills by the number of endorsements you have, but to get more endorsements for the skills you want to emphasize, rearrange your list and move those skills higher. Also, if you’re getting endorsed for random things or for things you don’t want to be endorsed for, you can always hide either the entire skill or the particular endorser. Just set your profile to edit mode and you’ll see a little demo in the Skills and Endorsements section showing you how to edit it.

  • You must show up every day with a meaningful vision, start with a strategic plan, and have a goal.
  • Be Innovative-Nothing changes if nothing changes! To create a new you, you must recreate you. Be creative with your thinking, think bigger!
  •  You must be PASSIONATE about it!-Put your whole heart into it!
  • Excuses, excuses, excuses….You can’t train a head that’s not in the game. Get in the game.

Signs of a poor cultural environment:

  • Senior management delegates the upkeep of, or ignores, culture, and fails to live by the company values.
  • Culture is seen as a project, not a way of life.
  • Culture conversations are reactive and occur only when trouble erupts.
  • Employees lack empowerment and are not appreciated.
  • Cultural engagement is left to outside consultants and fancy posters with no long-terms effort made to make the culture integral to the organization.
  • Bad behavior is ignored or, even worse, accepted.

When Robert Greenleaf proposed servant-leadership, it was in response to a shift from local communities to large institutional settings. Today, we are facing a new shift involving technology which connects us across time and space.

 

It is not just about using digital technologies. It is about integrating them well and making sense of when a particular tool fits well with a task.

Tip #6 is very applicable:


6. Silence is your friend. Don’t be afraid of a lull, a quietude, a silent period. Don’t yield every time to the temptation to fill the void. Be patient, revel in what Patrick O’Brian called “companionable silence.” Let your interview subject speak, and fill the quiet.

In the social sector, there is sometimes a prejudice against feasibility and planning studies – they’re seen as a fee source for consultants and a way for Boards to cover their hind quarters. But in my view, the interviews are worth their weight in gold – often quite literally. People want to be heard, they want to tell you what they think. They may even want to help. So pipe down, and listen.

Wonderful quote from Coach Dan, @DanVForbes the creator of the #LeadWithGiants virtual community.   As usual, Coach Dan helped me find the strength to keep going and re-inspired me in the process.  


From his post:


In, Think and Grow Rich, a book by Napolean Hill, he tells the story of Mr Darby who owned a gold mine during the Gold Rush days in Colorado. Although Mr. Darby unearthed some gold, it wasn’t enough to keep him going.


He worked harder, drilled farther, and dug deeper looking for more gold. He became tired, frustrated, and discouraged.  He began to think, what’s the use?


So, he quit. He gave up on his dream. He forsook his goal. He lost his passion.


In fact, he sold his mining equipment and the mine itself to a prospector for only a few hundred dollars.


Here’s the kicker. Within three feet of the place where Darby quit, the new owner tapped into a gold vein worth millions of dollars.

We talked for almost an hour the night before he died.Earlier that day federal investigators had raided his business. He didn't really explain why, and I didn't ask.

Touching post here by @jeff_haden.  As I read it, I felt like I did back in 911 when I simply had no doubt about the priorities in my life were.  I still do but this post is a wonderful reminder. 


If you knew you only had minutes left to live, which choices would you regret? Would you wish you had spent more time at work? Would you think about money you never earned, jobs you never landed, or companies you never started?


Would those be the kinds of decisions you would want back?


Of course not. You would think about the people you love, and how you wish you had chosen to spend more time with them. You would wish you had chosen to tell them how much they meant to you, over and over and over again.


Fortunately for us it's not too late.

All managers have the right and the authority to manage and strong management is not the same as bullying, but all managers should ask themselves the following questions:


  • Is the criticism constructive or destructive?
  • Is the criticism about the mistake, or about the person?
  • Is it designed to make the person aware of their error and to get it right in future, or just to humiliate them?

     

There is a very fine line between strong management and bullying, but when the sufferer becomes distressed, that line is crossed.

Kindness is a cornerstone of good leadership.  Kindness is ultimately about the basic respect you have for the humanity of the person standing in front of you needing your compassion. 

Speaking from my own experiences, many leaders mistake showing kindness for showing weakness.  We can give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they learned their skills from other mediocre leaders who would choose fear as their hammer.   That doesn't abscond these leaders from unlearning some of their destructive tendencies and relearning a better, more productive model. If they see no issue with how they're leading, they probably should not be leading others.  Leading is more than anything an expression of humanity where a person is entrusted with lifting up the people around them.  You just can't lead with any sort of humanity if you see basic kindness as weakness.

Great list here.  My favorite is to lead with questions not answers.  I would add to lead with questions, not assumptions.  


I was just in a difficult situation with someone who "assumed" something inaccurate about what I would preferred.  The whole thing could have been avoided with a simple question...
