"...Offer story-prompting opportunities to direct someone down a different path instead of being stuck in a cycle of self-defeating thinking patterns.

Providing older peer mentors who have already gone through similar experiences is one way for students to examine their existing narratives and to redirect their thinking by listening to the experiences of others."

No Excuses = Real Leadership | N2Growth Blog

No Excuses = Real Leadership | N2Growth Blog | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
The problem we face as a society is we live in a time where he or she with the best excuses wins.

Leaders don’t offer, nor do they accept excuses. True leadership demands the character to demonstrate personal responsibility for one’s actions, and the courage to hold others accountable for theirs. Excuses attempt to conceal personal or professional insecurities, laziness, and/or lack of ability. They accomplish nothing but to distract, dilute, and deceive. It was Benjamin Franklin who said, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”

The word “excuse” is most commonly defined as: a reason or explanation put forward to defend or justify a fault or offense. History’s greatest leaders have always fostered cultures of commitment, trust, and performance, where action is valued over rhetoric. Leaders who issue or accept excuses are complicit to muting performance and fueling mediocrity.

Bruner Corporation » Promoting a Culture of Servant Leadership | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it

Servant Leadership is not just a practice – it’s a culture of leading by example, which can be applied to both personal and professional lives.

By embracing the role of a Servant Leader, you are choosing to uphold and embody the Seven Pillars of Servant Leadership.

You seek lasting change, create authentic relationships, persevere with a non-anxious presence, invest in motivated people, and focus less on doing things the “right” way and more on doing what is right.

6 Reasons Core Values Matter

6 Reasons Core Values Matter | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it

Core values–or whatever you want to call them–are a BFD. Some folks might argue that they’re not that important, but I’d suggest they rethink that position because whether they think they’re important or not, core values are a big deal.

Here’s why they’re a big deal:

1. They encourage a sense of belonging.Humans are wired to want and need a sense of belonging, so why wouldn’t we want to createcommunities in our workplaces that provide the sort of positive, meaningful belonging that we’re designed to desire as human beings?

2. They promote loyalty. They’re like a stake in the ground, so to speak. The more certain sorts of values are internalized by the folks at an organization, the more likely people are to develop a sense of loyalty to the organization and those values.

The SEO Puzzle: The Most Important Pieces [Infographic]

The SEO Puzzle: The Most Important Pieces [Infographic] | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it

It doesn’t really matter how much you study it, it’s almost impossible to get the perfect SEO (Search Engine Optimization) score for any long period of time.

Each search engine has their own algorithm to rank websites, and as if that wasn’t complicated enough, they change that algorithm frequently in order to perfect it and make sure that the same sites don’t hog up the top positions simply because they’ve figured out the x-factor in the algorithm to dodge other more popular sites that have the traffic, content mass, and extensive Internet presence enough to be ranked at the top.

I would probably need an endless number of articles to cover all the different aspects of the perfect SEO, and if I tried to do that, I would probably not be able to pinpoint it anyway.

There Is No Magic Pill For Great Leadership

There Is No Magic Pill For Great Leadership | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it

I've been interviewing a number of executives for my new book, The Magnetic Workplace (Nicholas Brealey, 2013) and so far my findings have been rather interesting.

There is no magic pill for great leadership. Yet many organizations believe they can solve problems by handing someone a book (even if it's authored by me) or sending them to a one-day management training program at the local Holiday Inn. The results by themselves are usually disappointing.

Here's how great leadership is created:...
