New Study Uncovers The Powerful New Role Of Media In Children's Lives - Edudemic

New Study Uncovers The Powerful New Role Of Media In Children's Lives - Edudemic | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
A couple of weeks ago, Common Sense Media released their findings from a study they conducted on children’s media use in America. This was their second survey designed to document the media environments and behaviors of kids ages 8 and under, the first of which was conducted two years ago. While this information would clearly be interesting on its own, we find it to be even more interesting to have the comparison with the data from two years ago.

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Preparing for STEM Lessons on Coding with Hopscotch for iPad

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Preparing for STEM Lessons on Coding with Hopscotch for iPad | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
"This evening I’ve been playing with the free iPad app “Hopscotch,” which I’m planning to use for a four part / two week introductory unit on coding on the iPad with my 4th and 5th grade STEM students. (@iesSTEM) I’ve worked quite a bit with Scratch software from MIT, but this is my first time to “seriously play” with Hopscotch. Hopscotch is similar to Scratch, as a block-based (or icon-based) programming environment, but it is MUCH more limited with fewer available coding blocks. Despite these limitations, it appears to be a great app to use when introducing students to coding. And, it’s FREE! Since I have an iPad cart to use with students in my STEM classroom, but not full-day access to one of our school’s Windows-based computer labs, an iPad-based coding solution / app like Hopscotch is preferable for me now over Scratch. (Scratch is still flash-based, so although it’s web-based it doesn’t work completely on iPads. I’ve tried using Scratch on flash-friendly iPad browser apps like iSwifter and Puffin, but haven’t found the experience very good… yet.)"

Best iPad App of the Week: Terminology 3 - iPad Insight

Best iPad App of the Week: Terminology 3 - iPad Insight | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
"This week’s pick is Terminology 3– an old favorite in its second incarnation on the App Store, after a recent complete re-write for iOS 7. Terminology’s elevator pitch in the App Store is that it’s ‘a browser for the English language – part dictionary/thesaurus and part research tool’. And it has always lived up to that description very nicely. It’s been my favorite dictionary and thesaurus tool for years and I’m happy to say it serves a similar purpose for my 10 year old daughter as well."

How Video Is Paving the Way for the Future of Education | Digital Learning Environments

So much has been written about how educators must adapt to both modern technologies and contemporary student habits. It's a message that every teacher of all backgrounds and disciplines has taken to heart. The hard part is the execution. It's a centuries-old question that constantly must be reassessed, how to better relate to all students at their level of interest and prior knowledge base.

Up to 37% of Enterprise Computers Vulnerable to Microsoft Office Zero-day

Up to 37% of Enterprise Computers Vulnerable to Microsoft Office Zero-day | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
Our initial research of the exploit indicates that this vulnerability is capable of affecting Microsoft Office versions 2003, 2007, and 2010 (Office 2010 vulnerability is limited to Windows XP and Server 2003 operating systems) and that it will fail on machines viewing the documents in protected mode (ActiveX support in documents disabled). While it is not easy to determine if computers have ActiveX enabled for Office documents, it is possible to profile vulnerable combinations of Microsoft Windows and Office to help understand the attack surface. Our telemetry feeds indicate the following breakdown of Microsoft Office versions deployed in enterprise environments: - Office 2003 - 5% - Office 2007 - 30% - Office 2010 - 41% - Office 2013 - 14% Beyond practicing due diligence in opening any attachments arriving by email, it is recommended that all users of the affected Office versions install Microsoft Fix it 51004. Websense will continue to monitor any developments related to the use of this vulnerability in future attacks. ===> Beyond practicing due diligence in opening any attachments arriving by email, it is recommended that all users of the affected Office versions install Microsoft Fix it 51004. <=== Websense will continue to monitor any developments related to the use of this vulnerability in future attacks. -
