Is University education really worth it? | Capital Campus

Is University education really worth it? | Capital Campus | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
In less than a decade the number of institutions of higher learning in Kenya has increased from 17 public and private universities to the current 22 public universities, 14 chartered private universities and 12 others with Letter of Interim Authority. We need to ask ourselves, if all the renowned colleges offering certificates and diplomas are upgraded to university level where do those who miss the cut-off points go to? Is the quality of education offered in the new institutions similar to that in the already established? Is university education really worth it?

The Power Of The #Hashtag [INFOGRAPHIC] - AllTwitter

The Power Of The #Hashtag [INFOGRAPHIC] - AllTwitter | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

Hashtags are everywhere. In just a few years they’ve been heavily incorporated into network TV shows, commercials, movie promotions, magazine ads and, amazingly enough, for many folks they’re even part of their everyday vernacular (albeit usually with a touch of irony).

Who knew? Well, Twitter certainly didn’t – the hashtag originated on IRC and was pushed on to Twitter by its users, not the company itself – but they’ve been quick to capitalise, and mastering the hashtag is now an essential part of every digital marketing campaign.

This infographic from The Huffington Post outlines the basics and best practices for optimum hashtag use.

Video games can offer a playful approach to learning a new concept, providing a jumping off point for diving deeply into a topic. Games can’t do all the teaching, but they are an engaging way to get kids thinking -- even about ethics.

15 Excellent iPad Apps for Creating Books ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

15 Excellent iPad Apps for Creating Books ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
"I just learned through our colleagues in TeachThought about this interesting list featuring 15 iPad apps to create books. The list was created by Meg Wilson . Of course the word 'book' here is, more or less, used metaphorically to mean small to medium size writing projects. These are projects you can do with your students in class or ones that can span the entire semester or even school year. Book Creator and Book Writer are my favourite apps in this list and some of the apps included here are also new to me which is not surprising giving the rapidity with which apps are developed and created each day."

"Technology has radically revolutionized the human science and provided us with profound insights that were not knowable to us before. It has also cracked the dark secrets of some key scientific concepts that mystified the human mind since the dawn of time. The physiology of the body and body anatomy are some of these key areas that have benefited a great deal from the advancement of technology. Consequently, the teaching of these concepts have become way easier and more attainable. In this regard, developers now have designed so many apps that examine the human body in 3D."

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Preparing for STEM Lessons on Coding with Hopscotch for iPad

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Preparing for STEM Lessons on Coding with Hopscotch for iPad | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
"This evening I’ve been playing with the free iPad app “Hopscotch,” which I’m planning to use for a four part / two week introductory unit on coding on the iPad with my 4th and 5th grade STEM students. (@iesSTEM) I’ve worked quite a bit with Scratch software from MIT, but this is my first time to “seriously play” with Hopscotch. Hopscotch is similar to Scratch, as a block-based (or icon-based) programming environment, but it is MUCH more limited with fewer available coding blocks. Despite these limitations, it appears to be a great app to use when introducing students to coding. And, it’s FREE! Since I have an iPad cart to use with students in my STEM classroom, but not full-day access to one of our school’s Windows-based computer labs, an iPad-based coding solution / app like Hopscotch is preferable for me now over Scratch. (Scratch is still flash-based, so although it’s web-based it doesn’t work completely on iPads. I’ve tried using Scratch on flash-friendly iPad browser apps like iSwifter and Puffin, but haven’t found the experience very good… yet.)"
