Five tips: Writing a grad school statement of purpose | Capital Campus | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
Believe it or not, a poor statement of purpose can sometimes disqualify graduate school applicants. Here’s why. 8 Tips to Power-Up Your Classroom Presentations

8 Tips to Power-Up Your Classroom Presentations | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
Last month, I attended a Back to School Night for parents, sitting through presentation after presentation by teachers, some with slides that helped make their presentation a delight to listen to, and others . . . well, that's why I'm writing this blog post. The goal of a classroom presentation is to aid you in effectively conveying information in a way that allows students (or their parents) to remember what you said. Unfortunately, for some, the presentation becomes a crutch, and they begin to rely on the slides to tell their story, rather than to help them tell the story. I've been creating presentations using software like PowerPoint and KeyNote for 20 years, and I've learned a lot about how to most effectively communicate. Here's what I've found.1. Use as Many Slides as You Need

A World of Knowledge: 50 Different Views of Education - InformED

A World of Knowledge: 50 Different Views of Education - InformED | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
Education sprouts in many forms depending on how you look at it. Our views of what it should look like and how it should materialize depend on our value of it and our experience with it. What if a class consisted of words that led to information that whirled into blended realms of creativity set up just for students, created by students. The students then dictated what they learned instead of reluctantly ingesting information and standards imposed upon them.

Gord Holden's curator insight, December 26, 2013 11:44 AM

MOOCs are evolving, but the fact that they are continue to thrive despite woefully low percentages of course completions unnerves me. When success with "learning" is clearly not the goal, this leaves the fiscal considerations. Are they profitable? Yes. Will they evolve in ways that make them more effective with student learning? Maybe. But if profit is what has been driving them, I'm doubtful. This is unfortunate as 3D virtual learning environments have the potential to be that next big step, but will need to find homes where budgets are not the primary concern. Heritage Christian Online School is such a place, conducting personalized online courses with students and teachers inhabiting 3D virtual learning environments as avatars. The costs are higher than MOOCs, but the success rate is substantially higher as well. It seems that students are not the only ones being tested when it comes to education.
