The bad economics of free primary education

The bad economics of free primary education | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
Schools are open and thankfully there is now no talk of an impending strike. The government and the teachers’ unions have come to some truce and everything appears to be back to normal. This, however, is a misleading impression because in reality, the Kenya public primary schools system is in a fairly bad state and the heavy investment is not yielding commensurate returns. A rethinking of the delivery of public education is of urgent concern and demands the attention of highest level of leadership.

Content Curation: Inspiration wants to be free — news for iPad users

Content Curation: Inspiration wants to be free — news for iPad users | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
Another angle is to look at the iPad as a device to learn. It’s already had a huge impact on education with digital textbooks and connectivity to the Internet’s knowledge. But as educators know well, consuming knowledge passively is not as good as being active in the process: learning by doing works best and — like I did myself starting my iPad topic ===> knowledge sharing is also a great way to learn. <===

Stop Judging and Start Learning

Stop Judging and Start Learning | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
We can't all have the scope and influence of Steve Jobs. But we do all face many of the same issues, and his openness gives us the chance to learn from him. On excellence: "Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected." On mastery: "We don't get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life." On being yourself: "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma -- which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." On self-definition: "I'm as proud of what we don't do as I am of what we do." On being selective: "People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully."

10 Notable Differences Between Online and Traditional College Settings | top5onlinecolleges.org | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
Online learning has been increasing exponentially over the last decade. In fall 2010, more than 6.1 million students in the United States took at least one online class, representing a 10.1 percent increase over the year before. In comparison, traditional college learning (also called “brick-and-mortar” courses, in which the professor and students meet face-to-face) grew much slower; that same semester (fall 2010) saw an increase of just .6 percent over the year before.
